Moose Jaw Warriors News Release

The Moose Jaw Warriors scored three times in the third period on their way to a 5-2 win over the Calgary Hitmen at Mosaic Place on Friday night.

"We knew we had to come out strong and come out flying, it was a tie game going into the third and we knew the standings and we couldn't let that happen," Warriors forward Jagger Firkus said.

Firkus scored the go-ahead, and eventual game-winning goal, just 5:12 into the third period to help push the Warriors past the Hitmen.

Calder Anderson and Riley Niven added insurance makers later in the frame to help seal the victory.

"It was really tight for two periods, I didn't think we played our best hockey through 40 minutes and then played a lot better, played more to what we're looking for in the third period to come away with a win," Warriors assistant coach Gord Burnett said.

Firkus finished with a goal and two points in the win, which gives him a team-leading 70 points on the season.

The 17-year-old forward said his line with Brayden Yager and Anderson was feeling it offensively.

"We did a really good job, especially in the offensive zone, we were really strong on pucks and good at getting pucks back quick," Firkus said.

The Hitmen opened the scoring when Blake Allan took a feed from Maxim Muranov and buried it just 8:42 into the game.

Moose Jaw pushed back in the back-half of the first period and got on the board when Nathan Pilling tipped in a point shot by Denton Mateychuk for his fifth of the season.

Less than two minutes later, Yager snapped home his 28th of the season off a rebound to give the Warriors a 2-1 lead after 20.

The Warriors came out firing to start the second period with Yager coming close to his second goal of the night on a number of occasions.

"We have good chemistry on and off the ice and obviously, playing with [Anderson] tonight, he was a big boost for us," Firkus said on the trio's strong game.

While the Warriors had a lot of chances early in the period, it was Calgary that came out of the frame with the goal when Carter Yakemchuk walked into the zone and scored with just under three minutes to play to tie the game.

Moose Jaw rebounded quickly in the intermission and took control of the game, scoring three times on 18 shots in the third period to take the victory.

It was the 20th home win of the season for the Warriors.

Carl Tetachuk picked up his career-high 25th win of the season in net, making 22 saves for the Warriors.

Moose Jaw outshot Calgary 38-24 on the night.

The Warriors remain in fourth place in the Eastern Conference, one point ahead of the Saskatoon Blades.

Next up for Moose Jaw is on the Lethbridge Hurricanes at Mosaic Place on Saturday night. Puck drops at 7 p.m.
