Gauthier Stops 51, Cagnoni Nets Winner as Hawks Top T-Birds in Seattle

March 12, 2022 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Portland Winterhawks News Release

Taylor Gauthier stopped 51 of 53 shots and all seven Seattle shooters as the Winterhawks topped the Thunderbirds 3-2 in a shootout on Friday night.

Luca Cagnoni grabbed the winner for Portland in the breakaway contest, and Gauthier's 51-save showing marked the most saves he has made since joining the Winterhawks.

Following a tense opening few minutes, Portland opened the scoring at 6:06 when Clay Hanus tapped home a loose puck in the crease for his 15th of the year. James Stefan fired a shot that leaked through Thomas Milic, and Hanus was the only skater on the ice to locate the loose puck behind the Seattle netminder.

After weathering a few penalty kills, the Hawks doubled their lead midway through the second period on the power play as Hanus found Tyson Kozak streaking through center ice and Kozak chipped a through pass to Jaydon Dureau for a slick finish over Milic's pokecheck attempt. Portland carried its advantage for most of the third period, but a pair of late Seattle tallies sent the game to overtime.

Neither team found paydirt in the extra frame, nor in the first six rounds of the shootout until Cagnoni lit the lamp as the 14th shooter to take an attempt.

The Winterhawks head home now to take on the Vancouver Giants at the VMC on Saturday. Puck drop is set for 5:00 P.M. for Mascot Night.

QUOTE OF THE NIGHT presented by BBF TECHNOLOGIES:

"Obviously it feels good beating Seattle, especially in their barn. (Gauthier) played a hell of a game with fifty-something saves and a great shootout performance, but overall I thought the team played really well. We stuck to the game plan, got on their top guys and we couldn't ask for a better performance."
