Thon is Clutch in Extra-Inning Win

Clinton LumberKings News Release
Clinton, IA - Recently named All-Star Freddie Thon played the role of hero for the Clinton LumberKings Friday night, hitting a solo home run in the fourth and delivering a walk-off single in the bottom of the 11th in a 4-3 win over the Beloit Snappers. Thon broke out of an 0-for-8 slump with his 2-for-5 performance, giving the LumberKings back-to-back wins and a series split.
With the game tied 3-3 in the bottom of the 11th, Matt Smith was the catalyst, getting on base with a single to center. A pair of wild pitches by Snappers reliever Frank Mata put Smith and John Mayberry in scoring position. Thon then laced an 0-2 pitch from Mata to the right-center gap, allowing Smith to trot home for the game-winner.
Thon's homer came in the fourth off Beloit starter Ryan Mullins. Solo blast number seven landed in the Lumber Lounge and tied the game up at 2-2.
Although the Snappers retook the lead with a run in the fifth, the L-Kings answered the bell in the eighth as another hot hitter took center stage. Jose Vallejo, who went 4-for-5 on the night, got on base with a line single to right. He then proceeded to second on a sacrifice bunt and came home to tie the game at 3 as John Mayberry stroked a single to center. Both bullpens worked effectively to send the game into extras.
Jose Marte (W, 4-3) became the first LumberKing pitcher to win four games, pitching two scoreless innings. Starter Omar Poveda worked effectively through six, allowing three runs on eight hits, striking out six.
Mata (L, 3-2) allowed the winning run in his one inning of work for the Snappers.
The LumberKings (21-30) now hit the road for the final time in the first half, taking on the Peoria Chiefs for four games. Game one pits right-hander Kyle Rogers (0-4) for Clinton against lefthander Donnie Veal (4-3) for the Chiefs, first pitch set for 6:30 pm.
