Dayton Dragons News Release
Lansing, MI - The Dayton Dragons (29-33) knocked around the Midwest League's second best pitching staff, picking up a 12-5 win over the Lansing Lugnuts (36-24). The fourth and final game of the four game series between the Dragons and Lugnuts featured two of the Midwest League's most dominate starting pitchers. Lansing starter Billy Carnline (LP, 5-3) entered play on Friday night with the third lowest earned run average for a pitcher in the Midwest League. His 1.75 ERA included a current string where the right hander had allowed only one earned run in his last 19.0 innings. Dayton starter Johnny Cueto (WP, 6-1) had put together back-to-back complete game shutouts during the month of May that included the only no hitter in Dragons history and a one hitter that followed that start.
Dayton hitters jumped on Carline in the first inning, touching him up for three runs, all earned, on three hits. Mike DeJesus led the inning off with a single and moved to second when Carline plunked Mike Griffin with a pitch. Jay Bruce reached on a fielder's choice that erased Griffin but moved DeJesus to third. Habelito Hernandez came through with an RBI double to the left field corned that scored DeJesus and moved Bruce to third giving Dayton a 1-0 lead. Two batters later, J.D. Reininger laced a double into the left field corner that knocked home two more to run the lead to 3-0.
Carnline was roughed up again three innings later as the Dragons knocked him around for four more runs to increase the lead to 7-0. A hit batsman and back-to-back singles loaded the bases with no outs for Josh Holden, who knocked home Reininger with a SAC fly to left field. DeJesus picked up his third hit of the night with a swinging bunt that Lansing third baseman Anthony Garibaldi threw into right field. Angel Colon scored from second base on the wild throw for the second run of the inning. With two down, Bruce bounced a single into center for a two RBI hit and a 7-0 lead. Carline was rocked for seven runs, six earned, and eight hits in 4.0 innings of work, jumping his earned run average from 1.75 to 2.52.
Lansing could only manage one run off Cueto picking up a single tally in the bottom of the fourth inning on a solo home run by Brian Pettway. Cueto tossed 5.0 innings to pick up his sixth win of the season. The right hander scattered six hits and struck out seven and walked one.
The Dragons roughed up the Lansing bullpen as well on the night picking up a single run off Po-Hsuan Keng (ND) in the seventh, an unearned run scoring on a double play ball off the bat of Griffin. In the eighth, Dayton faced Jordan Timm (ND) and sent nine men to the plate picking up another four runs to increase the lead to 12-1. Holden came up with the bases loaded for the second time on the night and again delivered, this time picking up an RBI single. DeJesus notched his fourth hit of the night clearing the bases with a gap double to left center that scored three runs and made it 12-1.
Russell Haltiwanger (ND) tossed 3.0 innings of scoreless relief taking over for Cueto, allowing just one hit and striking out four. Damian Ursin (ND) pitched the final inning giving up a grand slam to Yuber Rodriguez that cut the lead to 12-5.
The Dragons open up the final home stand of the first half of the season with a four game series against the West Michigan Whitecaps on Saturday night at Fifth Third Field. RHP Robert Manuel (0-0, 0.93 ERA) will get the start for Dayton in the series opener, while the Whitecaps counter with LHP Erik Averill (2-3, 3.92 ERA). 1410 ESPN Radio WING AM will carry the game live beginning with the Dragons pre game show at 6:30 PM.
