South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
South Bend - The South Bend Silver Hawks owned a 5-0 lead against Eastern Division foes, the Southwest Michigan Devil Rays after two innings. However, poor defense and poor relief pitching appeared to spell doom for the Hawks, but a late inning rally and reliever Kyler Newby saved the game for the Hawks in their 7-6 win over the Devil Rays.
The Hawks pushed five runs across the plate in the second inning. Pedro Ciriaco, Bryan Byrne and Trey Hendricks each had RBI hits, while Leyson Septum's two-run triple scored Pedro Ciriaco and Manny Ferrer giving the Hawks a 5-0.
The Devils Rays chipped at the Hawks lead over the course of four innings, scoring a pair in the second, single runs in innings three and four and another pair in the fifth to lead 6-5.
In the seventh, the Hawks rallied to take the lead needed one hit. With one out, Bryan Byrne walked and advanced 90 feet on a Trey Hendricks base hit to left center. With Will Crouch at the plate, a wild pitch by Devil Rays reliever Drew Bigda moved Byrne to third and Hendricks to second. Crouch reached on a free pass loading the bases for Ricardo Sosa. Sosa walked bringing Byrne to the plate tying the game at six. The bases remained loaded for Orlando Mercado, whose ground out cashed in Hendricks to give South Bend a 7-6 lead.
Kyler Newby (2-0) came out of the Silver Hawks pen to throw three scoreless and hitless innings of relief, while fanning six and walking one. Drew Bigda, who allowed the two Silver Hawks runs in the seventh, drops to 1-2.
The Silver Hawks head to the road for a four game set against the Beloit Snappers before returning to the Cove next Thursday night against the Lansing Lugnuts. Thursdays are Triple Play Thursday's sponsored by 103.9 The Bear and WB25, with $3 Michelob Ultras served in the Budweiser Bullpen Bar and Grille.
