Burlington Bees News Release

Burlington, IA (June 9, 2006) "" The Peoria Chiefs (35-26) completed a four-game sweep of the Burlington Bees (29-30) with a 4-2 win at Community Field tonight. The Chiefs finish the first half a perfect 8-0 against the Bees. Now with just eight games left before the All-Star Break, the Bees are five games Peoria for a spot in the post-season.

The Bees got on the board first tonight on a solo home run by Jeff Howell in the bottom of the second inning. The 1-0 lead was the Bees' first lead against the Chiefs in 42 innings. It was the only run allowed by Peoria starter Mitch Atkins (5-1) who worked through six innings and allowed a total of three hits for the win.

The Bees lead didn't last long as the Chiefs rallied for three in the top of the third. Bees' starter Matt Kniginyzky (6-3) hit Jonathan Mota with a pitch to start the inning and Robinson Chirinos moved the runner to second with a groundout. Mark Reed doubled to the wall in left to drive in Mota. After a flyout, Yusuf Carter singled in Reed and Kyle Reynolds tripled off the wall in right to knock in Carter and complete the rally. Those were the only runs against Kniginyzky in six innings of work. He allowed six hits and struck out four. Tonight was his first loss since May 8th at South Bend and his first home loss of the year.

Chris Hayes pitched two innings in relief and allowed the Chiefs' final run in the seventh. With one out, Chirinos singled, stole second, and scored on a base hit by Reynolds. Another single, a groundout, and an intentional walk, loaded the bases but Hayes got out of the inning by freezing pinch-hitter Dylan Johnston with strike three on the outside corner. Johnston argued the call and was ejected from the game. Yovany Damico finished the game on the mound for the Bees with a scoreless ninth.

Mike Avery followed Atkins to the mound for Peoria in the seventh and pitched two scoreless innings and struck out four. The Bees did make a rally attempt in the ninth against Scott Koerber. Koerber retired the first two batters before Miguel Vega drove a ball to right-center field that bounced over the wall for a double. Koerber then walked JP Lowen and the Chiefs turned to Jeff Teasley. Jose Duarte lined a 3-2 pitch from Teasley into left field for a single to drive in Vega and a walk to Howell loaded the bases, but Teasley got out of the jam and earned his first save of the season by catching pinch-hitter Brady Everett looking at strike three to end the game.

The Chiefs leave town and the Bees continue this home stand tomorrow night with the first of four against the Kane County Cougars. RH Carlos Rosa (5-3, 2.84) gets the start for the Bees against RH Vince Mazzaro (6-4, 4.92) of the Cougars. The game starts at 7:00 and the gates open at six for a Long John Silver's/A&W Family Night. Mom, Dad, and all the kids in their house get in for $14 and Louisa Communications and JD Byrider team up to give away a bike. Tomorrow is also team photo giveaway night for the first 750 fans sponsored by Photovisions and Burlington Trailways. The game will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 6:40.
