June 9, 2006 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

The Cedar Rapids Kernels (27-35) rode the arm of ace Nick Adenhart and the bat of Brett Martinez as they broke a six game losing streak with an 8-6 win over the Swing of the Quad Cities (29-30) in front of 2,440 fans in Davenport on Friday.

Adenhart (8-2) scattered five hits and allowed an earned run (three total) while strking out seven over eight innings to pick up his league-leading eighth win of the season.

Brett Martinez hit his first home run of the season, a 2 run shot in the fifth inning that turned out to be key insurance runs. The Kernels shook the cobwebs from their bats and pounded out ten hits in the win. Mark Trumbo, Flint Wipke and Santrel Smith each with two hits on the night.

The Kernels took an 8-3 lead into the ninth as Robert Romero took over for Adenhart. A hit batter and walk wrapped around a line out to right left runners on second and third. Kernels skipper Bobby Magallanes made a call to the bullpen and Ryan Aldridge came on to save the game. Ryan also had a little trouble getting going and after uncorking a wild pitch and a double to make the score 8-6, he struck out the last two Swing batters to earn his 12th save and preserve the Kernel victory.

Quad Cities starter Adam Daniels (2-5) took the loss for the Swing.

The Kernels end the first half of the regular season at home as they start an eight game, nine day homestand on Saturday. Kernel All-Star Stephen Marek (6-1) is set to start as the Kernels host the Fort Wayne Wizards at 7 pm.

The eight games will feature two fireworks shows, Skyy Dogs USA and Reggy plus a Father's Day Brunch and the Principal Family Fun Fest. The MWL then takes a few days off for the All-Star game in Davenport before starting the second half of the season on June 22.
