West Michigan Whitecaps News Release

FT. WAYNE, IN - Josh Geer threw eight shutout innings as Fort Wayne avoided a four game sweep with a 6-1 win over the Whitecaps. The loss ends a four game winning streak for West Michigan, which had also won six consecutive games on the road.

Geer has pitched 13 innings this season against West Michigan with no runs allowed. He is 2-0 against the ‘Caps and 5-2 overall.

Sendy Vasquez pitched 5.2 shutout innings, but gave up a two-out RBI single in the sixth to Will Venable that broke up the scoreless tie. Daryl Jones followed with a two-run double for a 3-0 Wizards lead.

In the eighth, former Wizard Ricky Steik nearly escaped a jam against his former team. A triple by Mike Baxter followed by walks to Kyle Blanks and Venable loaded the bases with two out. However, Steik struck out Jones and prompted Nick Hundley to hit a ground ball to third that bounced off the chest of Cory Middleton.

Middleton still had a chance to nab Hundley at first, but threw the ball over first baseman Rafael Mendez to clear the bases. Three runs scored and the Wizards lead stretched to 6-0.

With two out in the ninth, the Whitecaps loaded the bases against closer John Madden. Mendez came through with an RBI walk before Pedro Cotto grounded out to end the threat.
