Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

The Swing of the Quad Cities fell short of the sweep for their second series in a row, scoring three runs in the ninth inning but falling to the Cedar Rapids Kernels by a score of 8-6 at John O'Donnell Stadium. The Swing missed a chance to climb back over .500 for the first time since April 21, leaving the potential game-tying run in the batter's box in the bottom of the ninth.

Quad Cities (29-30) takes the loss after having won nine of their last 10 games coming in, and sits five games out of a possible playoff berth thanks to a four-game sweep by Peoria over Burlington. Cedar Rapids (27-35) snaps a six-game losing streak with the win.

Down 8-3 in the bottom of the ninth, leadoff hitter Chad Gabriel was beaned by a pitch from Robert Romero and Simon Williams drew a one-out walk. Henry Guerrero singled to load the bases, chasing Romero from the game in favor of closer Ryan Aldridge. The first batter he faced was Daniel Nelson, and after one run came home on a wild pitch the Swing leadoff hitter stroked a two-run double down the first base line to bring the tying run to the plate. But Aldridge was up to the task, striking out Casey Rowlett and Colby Rasmus swinging to preserve the Kernels 8-6 win.

Nick Adenhart (8-2) became the first Midwest Leaguer to eight wins with the win, allowing three runs - one earned - on five hits with seven strikeouts in eight sturdy innings. He was wild at times, issuing three walks and four wild pitches. Aldridge (12) picked up the save with a pair of strikeouts in the ninth.

Adam Daniels (2-5) took the loss for Quad Cities, allowing five runs - four earned - on four hits, four walks, and two wild pitches in 4.2 frames. The southpaw struck out three, but was chased from the game after a home run by Brett Martinez in the fifth. Ashley Hooks was touched for three runs on three hits in 3.1 innings of relief work.

In the top of the fifth, Cedar Rapids was ahead 3-1 when they chased Daniels from the game. After a caught stealing erased one baserunner, Brad Coon beat out a bunt single. He was at first base with one out when Martinez slugged a two-run bomb to left, sending it halfway up the berm and giving the Kernels a 5-1 lead.

Quad Cities tried to rally in the bottom of the frame. A.J. Van Slyke and Guerrero each drew walks, and Van Slyke scored on a single through the right side by Nelson. When Rowlett's groundball was misplayed by the second baseman one batter later, Guerrero hustled home to pull the Swing to within 5-3.

Cedar Rapids would add two more runs in the sixth and one in the seventh, however, giving them all the cushion they would need to stave off the late comeback.
