Chesapeake Baysox News Release
BOWIE, Md. - The Bowie Baysox will be in the center of an intergalactic conflict when the team hosts Star Wars Night at Prince George's Stadium Saturday, June 23, as the Baysox play a doubleheader against the Reading Phillies beginning at 5:35 p.m. The event features characters in movie-quality replica costumes, lightsaber battles, droids, pre and postgame performances, and a fireworks extravaganza after the Jedi Knights and Sith Lords have a final showdown.
Both games of the doubleheader will be seven innings long with the second game beginning 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first. Fans only need to purchase one ticket for admission to both games.
The Baysox have long supported the rebel alliance, hosting Jedi Knights, rebel pilots and other members of the Terrapin Base of the Rebel Legion. The conflict begins when Darth Vader, storm troopers and other members of the Old Line Garrison and Garrison Tyranus of the 501st Legion invade the ballpark to quell the resistance. The battle will be decided on the field as Jedi Knights and Sith Lords from the Defenders of the Force hold lightsaber battles between innings and before the fireworks.
Despite the conflict, fans are encouraged to attend the game to see a special pregame performance by the DDP Drill Team featuring lightsabers. Fans can also meet members of the R2-D2 Builders Club, and learn how to build their own droids.
Promotions Manager Chris Rogers is excited for the event. "Star Wars Saturday is one of my favorite events of the year because of all the great groups that come out in movie-quality costumes," Rogers said. "As you walk around the concourse it's so easy to picture yourself on Tatooine, Naboo, or Dagobah because you are standing next to a Jedi Knight, Stormtrooper, Jawa, or any number of authentic Star Wars characters. Everyone, especially those who are Star Wars fans or who have never experienced this event before, is in for a real treat."
Since its release on May 25, 1977, "Star Wars" has been an integral part of American pop culture, spanning six films, an animated series, several video games and numerous works of fiction.
