Baysox Walk into a Win, Avoid Sweep

Portland, ME. - The Bowie Baysox (24-34) batters were walked a season-high 11 times in a win over the Portland Sea Dogs (25-34) on Thursday afternoon. The win snapped a six-game road-losing streak for the Baysox and avoided a three-game sweep.

For the second time in the three-game series, the Baysox opponent scored first. Portland struck first in the bottom of the third inning against Bowie starter Zach Clark. With one out, Zach Gentile reached base on a throwing error by Zelous Wheeler and was then moved to second base after Nick Natoli singled to right field. With two outs, Gentile scored after Shannon Wilkerson singled to right field, making the score 1-0.

Portland extended their lead in the bottom of the fourth inning following a lead-off double from Reynaldo Rodriguez. With two outs, Rodriguez scored after Derrik Gibson doubled to right field, making the score 2-0.

The Baysox tied the game in the top of the fifth inning against Portland right-handed starter Chris Balcom-Miller. With one out, Jonathan Schoop took first base after being hit by a pitch and was then moved to second base after an Allan de San Miguel single. The Baysox then loaded the bases after Antoan Richardson was walked. Schoop then tagged from third base and crossed home plate after a Josh Barfield sacrifice fly to center field, making the score 2-1. Bowie then loaded the bases for the second time in the inning after Buck Britton was walked. With two outs, de San Miguel scored after Rhyne Hughes was walked, making the score 2-2. Former Baysox right-handed pitcher Chorye Spoone replaced Balcom-Miller on the mound to finish the inning after Balcom-Miller walked his fourth batter of the inning. Balcom-Miller pitched four and two-thirds innings allowing two runs on two hits while walking six and striking out five.

The Sea Dogs regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning after Natoli doubled to left field to lead-off the inning and was later scored after a two-out single from Juan Carlos Linares, making the score 3-2.

The Baysox tied the game for the second time during the contest in the top of the sixth inning. Shortstop Manny Machado was walked to start the inning and was then moved to second after a Wheeler single. Machado advanced to third base and Wheeler to second base after a sacrifice bunt from Schoop. Machado was then scored after a de San Miguel groundout, making the score 3-3. Following the score, Richardson and Josh Barfield were walked, bringing the Baysox walk total to nine for the game, a season-high mark. The Baysox ended the inning leaving the bases loaded for the second straight inning in the game.

Michael Belfiore replaced Clark on the mound in the bottom of the sixth inning before Portland once again took the lead. With one out, Gentile was walked and was later scored after Jeremy Hazelbaker hit a two-out double, making the score 4-3. The score marked the fourth straight inning that Portland tallied a run with two-outs. Clark pitched five innings allowing three runs (two earned runs) on eight hits while striking out two batters and walking one.

Bowie jumped to a sizeable lead in the top of the seventh inning after a three-double, four-hit inning. Hughes doubled to left field to lead-off the inning and then scored after Brandon Waring doubled to center field. With one out, Wheeler was walked and Spoone was replaced on the mound by right-handed reliever Caleb Clay. Following the pitching change, Schoop singled to left field and scored Waring, advancing Wheeler to second base. One batter later, de San Miguel tallied his second double and third RBI of the game, scoring Wheeler and Schoop and making the score 7-4.

Greg Burke replaced Belfiore on the mound to begin the bottom of the eighth inning while Portland narrowed the Bowie lead. Matt Spring singled to left field and then advanced to second base after a Gentile single. Spring later scored from second with two outs after Natoli grounded into a force out, making the score 7-5.

Portland attempted one last rally in the bottom of the ninth inning but came up short after Oscar Tejeda grounded into a one-out double play, leaving men on first and third. Burke earned his tenth save of the season as he allowed one run (no earned runs) on three hits while walking no batters and striking out three.

Belfiore earned the win for the Baysox, pitching two innings allowing one run on three hits while walking one and striking out three.

Spoone earned the loss for Portland after pitching one and two-thirds innings allowing four runs on three hits while walking four and striking out one.

The Baysox will begin a three-game weekend series with the New Hampshire Fisher Cats tomorrow at 7:05 PM.

The Baysox are in the midst of a six-game road trip. They will return home on Tuesday, June 12 for a six-game homestand that will include fireworks, a pint glass giveaway, and their annual Legends of Wrestling Night featuring Bret "The Hitman" Hart.
