Wright Flirts with No-Hitter as Aeros Complete Sweep
June 7, 2012 - Eastern League (EL1)
Akron RubberDucks News Release
Akron, OH -Steven Wright held the New Britain Rock Cats to two hits and a run over seven innings Thursday night, winning his fifth game of the year and lifting the Aeros to a 2-1 victory at Canal Park.
The Aeros (36-20) completed a three-game sweep of the Rock Cats and have won seven of the last eight games. The Aeros have won nine straight home games, sweeping three straight series in the process. Overall, the Aeros are 23-7 at Canal Park this season.
Showcasing his deceptive knuckleball, Wright (5-2) was dominant, holding New Britain hitless through 6 1/3 innings. He allowed a one-out double to center in the seventh to the Cats' Matt Rizzotti to lose the no-hit bid. One out later, Chris Colabello also doubled, driving home Rizzotti for a 1-0 New Brtiain lead.
New Britain starter Logan Darnell (5-4) was equally impressive, holding the Aeros scoreless through six. After being staked to a lead, however, he faltered in the bottom of the seventh. Akron shortstop Juan Diaz led off the inning with a long home run to left, his fourth of the season, to tie the game at 1-1.
Logan proceeded to load the bases on a double by Ben Copeland and a pair of walks. With one out, he walked Trevor Crowe to force in the go-ahead run.
Wright gave way to Bryan Price after seven innings, having allowed just two hits and one run. He walked four and struck out six. Wright lowered his ERA to 1.67, currently good for second in the league. In his last two starts, Wright is 2-0, and has allowed exactly three hits over 13 innings.
Price worked the final two frames, surrendering only one hit and striking out two to notch his third save of the season.
In the three game series against the Rock Cats (32-26), Aeros pitching recorded 30 strikeouts.
The win increased Akron's lead in the EL West to 5 =C21/2 games. Second-place Harrisburg lost at home to Binghamton, 4-1.
The Aeros will continue the homestand as they welcome in the Altoona Curve (Pirates) on Friday evening at 7:05 for the start of a three-game weekend series. LHP Nathan Baker (3-6, 5.40) is the scheduled starter for the Curve, while RHP Paolo Espino (0-2, 3.43) will take the ball for Akron. All Aeros games are broadcast on Fox Sports 1350 AM and online at www.akronaeros.com. For more information, please call the Aeros at 330-253-5151.
