Textbook Start to Road Trip

Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

Ailing from a 2-4 homestand, the Winnipeg Goldeyes made themselves feel a lot better with a textbook start to a six-game road trip.

The Goldeyes (7-10) scored single runs in five consecutive innings to beat the Lincoln Saltdogs (5-12) 5-3 Monday night at Haymarket Park before 2,148 fans.

After three scoreless innings to start the game, the Goldeyes rattled off singles from the fourth through eighth innings. Lincoln came back to the tie the game in the bottom of the fourth and fifth, but a group effort out of the bullpen allowed Winnipeg to pull away.

Goldeyes starter Coby Cowgill went 4 1/3 innings in his team debut, striking out five and allowing two earned runs. From there, Raul Rivera, Brendan Lafferty, Mark Pope and Jailen Peguero kept Saltdogs hitters off balance. Lafferty was tagged with a run in the eighth.

Winnipeg's defence also chipped in with a pair of 4-6-3 double plays to the end the sixth and seventh innings and didn't commit an error in a game for the first time since May 30.

The Goldeyes offensive attack was well-balanced with the first six batters in Winnipeg's lineup registering at least one hit and Winnipeg's four RBI each coming from a different player. Jon Weber led the way with three hits, while Brad Boyer and Nic Jackson each had two hits.

Rivera pitched two scoreless innings to get the win, while Peguero picked up the save in the ninth inning. Lincoln starter Jesse Smith suffered the loss.

Kyle Anderson (0-1, 4.70) will take the ball for Winnipeg in the middle game of the series Wednesday night against Lincoln's Kevin McGovern (1-0, 3.79).

The pre-game show on Jewel 100.5 FM with Steve Schuster begins at 6:00 p.m. Game time is 6:30 p.m.
