Wichita Wingnuts News Release

WICHITA, KS (June 8, 2015) - Despite jumping out to an 11-4 record early in the season, the Wichita Wingnuts have continued to search for ways to improve their everyday lineup. The team expects Monday signee Joash Brodin to provide solid defense and another bat for Kevin Hooper to pencil into the order each night. In other coinciding moves Scott Shuman was activated from the disabled list and both Taylor Oldham and Tyler Coughenour were released.

The 28-year old Brodin will be playing his sixth season of professional baseball and spent at least part of each of them in independent ball. After concluding his college career with two years at the College of Charleston, the outfielder/first baseman went undrafted. He received his first professional opportunity in 2009 with the Midwest Sliders of the Frontier League. His ten home run, 37 RBI performance allowed him to embark on a three and a half year career in the league with four different organizations.

In 2012, Brodin received an opportunity in the Atlantic League with the Long Island Ducks. He hit a solid .282 in that season before bursting onto the scene as one of the best hitters in the league the following year. His .307 average with 11 home runs and 49 RBI led him not only to a start in the Atlantic League All-Star game, but a shot in affiliated ball for the first time. His contract was purchased by the Arizona Diamondbacks late in the season and he played in eight games for Single-A Visalia.

Last season the 6'4, 225-pound outfielder was back with Long Island and batted at a .254 clip while launching nine home runs and driving in 60 in 133 contests.  He also stole 28 bases. Over the course of his career he has put together a resume that includes a .299 batting average, 127 doubles, 67 home runs, 354 RBI, and 103 stolen bases. His on-base percentage is a solid .372 in over 600 games.

Oldham was the Wingnuts 2014 Unsung Hero Award winner, but has struggled to overcome a shoulder injury suffered on opening night. Coughenour, a former Wichita State Shocker, had played in eight games and driven in a run.
