Wichita Wingnuts News Release

WICHITA, KS (June 8, 2015) - Omar Bencomo was traded from the Wichita Wingnuts to the Laredo Lemurs on Thursday evening. Four days later he pitched against his old teammates and limited them to one run on seven hits as his new team emerged victorious by a 6-1 margin.

The offense of the Lemurs (9-8) gave the right-hander a cushion right out of the gates. Jimmy Mojica started the game with a single and scored immediately on a first pitch triple to the gap off the bat of Abel Nieves. The member of last season's championship team scored in the next at bat when a wild pitch got away from catcher John Nester and to the backstop. Starting pitcher Anthony Capra was able to right the ship and strike out the side in the inning and never allowed another earned run in his 7.0 frames.

Laredo was able to stretch the lead with the aid of an error in the fifth. With runners on first and second, Nester tried to throw behind the runner at first and sailed the ball toward the right field corner. The runner from second, Kevin Taylor, scored easily to make it 3-0.

The Wingnuts (11-5) put together their best threat of the game against Bencomo in the sixth inning. With two outs, Alberto Gonzalez singled and went to second on David Espinosa's walk. Former Lemur Matt Padgett, who Bencomo was traded for, came through with an RBI single to cut the deficit to 3-1.  The inning ended with Joash Brodin at the plate when Espinosa was picked off at second.

The 3-1 score held until the top of the ninth when another former Lemur, Byron Minnich, allowed the visitors to score three runs on five hits. Tony Delmonico launched his fourth home run of the season, a two-run shot to left to increase the lead to 5-1 and then Mojica tacked on a run-scoring single.

Reliever John Brebbia silenced the Wingnuts in the ninth inning by retiring the side in order.

Capra struck out a season-high nine batters in the outing despite suffering the loss. Padgett and Dustin Geiger paced the Wichita offense with 2-3 performances at the plate.

Game two of the series is slated for Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. RHP Tim Brown will throw for the Wingnuts in a battle with fellow RHP Sam Martin.
