Wichita, KS- The official statistician of the American Association, Pointstreak, has announced that Laredo Lemurs OF Denis Phipps has been named this week's Pointstreak Player of the Week for the week ending June 7.
Phipps had a monster week at the plate, going 15-for-26 and propelling the Lemurs to five wins. The San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic resident notched five doubles, a home run and six RBI over the course of the week.
Phipps began his week on Monday with a 3-for-6 game against the Lincoln Saltdogs at Uni-Trade Stadium in Laredo, Tex. He recorded a double, an RBI and a run scored as the Lemurs won 12-5. A day later, Phipps went 2-for-3 with two RBI, two walks and a run scored as the Lemurs clinched the series with a 9-5 win. Laredo swept Lincoln thanks to a narrow 7-6 triumph on Wednesday, and Phipps added another multi-hit game in the process by going 2-for-4 with a run scored.
The weekend sent the Lemurs to Fargo, N.D. and Newman Outdoor Field for a road series with the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks. Friday's ballgame was the lone blemish on the Lemurs' record for the week, as they fell 10-4. Despite the loss, Phipps went 3-for-5 with his second double of the week and also had an RBI single in the first inning. On Saturday, Phipps had his best game of the week, a 3-for-4 performance against the RedHawks. All three of the hits were extra-base hits - two doubles and a home run - and Phipps drove in two runs and scored three as the Lemurs won 5-1. The week ended with a 2-for-4 performance Sunday that included a double and two runs scored in Laredo's 15-4 win.
On the season, Phipps is hitting an incredible .429 (27-for-63) with seven doubles, two home runs and 12 RBI.
2015 is Phipps' second campaign in Independent Baseball. In 2014, he hit .335 (84-for-251) in 66 games with the Lemurs. Phipps recorded 15 doubles, a triple and 15 home runs with 47 RBI. Before coming to the Lemurs, he spent eight seasons in the Cincinnati Reds system, reaching the Major Leagues in September 2012. He spent a month in 2014 with the Charlotte Knights, the AAA affiliate of the Chicago White Sox, but was released and came to Laredo.
The Lemurs are now 8-8 after their big week, and open a road series tonight at the Wichita Wingnuts. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. from Lawrence-Dumont Stadium in Wichita, Kan.
