Fort Worth Brahmas News Release
NORTH RICHLAND HILLS, Texas - Tight goaltending from Brett Jaeger gave Texas their sixth straight win in a close 2-1 shootout victory over the Allen Americans.
A special President's Day early start in Allen seemed to throw the Brahmas off in the first period as they were outshot 17-5 and found themselves down two guys for 1:18 with both A.J. Gale and Jason Deitsch in the penalty box. With just ten ticks remaining on the 5-on-3, American's defenseman, Ryan Fairbarn lit the lamp when he fired a shot from the top point to Brett Jaeger's blocker side.
Texas came back to tie things in the second with a powerplay goal of their own when Luke Sellars crept in on Chris Whitley and released a wrister with :39 seconds left in the period. Deitsch and Tyler Skworchinski assisted on the goal; with the assist Deitsch extended his point streak to six games.
The Brahmas penalty killing unit had to battle back once again when they were faced with a 5-on-3 man disadvantage situation, this time for over a minute and a half. The Texas third ranked PK unit proved its strength, outmuscling the American powerplay for the kill.
Two men down with 1:19 left in regulation for the third time in the game Texas was able to get out of regulation with the 1-1 tie but had to begin the extra period on a 5-on-3 for :20 seconds, despite the overtime rule of a 4-on-4 play. Following the expiration of the first Brahmas penalty, play resumed as normal with a 4-on-3 advantage to Allen. Five minutes wouldn't be enough for the cross town rivals as the game headed into the shootout for the third time this season.
Shootout goals from Sellars and Lee Jubinville matched a pair of goals from the Americans, but it was the eighth Texas shooter, Matt Pierce that gave the Brahmas the win. Jaeger stopped 41 shots in net and the Brahmas penalty kill was 9 for 10 for the afternoon.
The Brahmas return home Friday night when they host the Wichita Thunder for a 7:05 PM start. On Saturday Texas will take on Southern Conference foe, Odessa Jackalopes, for a 7:05 PM faceoff. For tickets please contact the Brahmas Box Office at (817) 336-4423 or log on to:
