February 15, 2010 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Rapid City Rush News Release
(Rapid City, SD) - The Rapid City community is invited to the Civic Center Ice Arena today at 1pm to be a part of the fight against cancer. Rush players and staff will shave their heads in support of the fight against cancer after the generous donations at "Pink at the Rink Night". On Friday night, Rush fans met the goal of $10,000 raised during the Rush v. Jackalopes game and now five players along with staff will shave their heads. Scott Wray, Jon Pelle, Colt King and Kirk Medernach will all shave their heads, while captain Luke Fritshaw will be in attendance. Fritshaw shaved his head directly after Rapid City's 7-5 win over Odessa.
At Friday night's game against the Odessa Jackalopes, the Rapid City Rush hosted their second annual "Pink at the Rink" event. With numerous promotions taking place and players auctioning off specialty jerseys, the Rush helped raise over $60,000 to be donated to the Rapid City Regional Hospital Foundation and Regional Cancer Care Institute. The money raised is being donated to help purchase a brand new TomoTherapy table which will help treat and fight all types of cancer.
The Rush were able to raise money through a number of events and promotions. Over $10,000 was raised during the game with donations from the sellout crowd in attendance. All of the proceeds from "Chuck a Puck" as well as program sales also went towards the cause. Finally, $48,500 was brought in with the jersey auction after the game, highlighted by Derek LeBlanc - $5,000, Jon Pelle - $3,800, and Gio Flamminio - $3,200. All of the money raised will stay in the Rapid City area and help benefit all types of cancer.
Tickets are still available for Tuesday's contest against the Colorado Eagles. Tuesday's game will feature a performance from America's Got Talent finalists, "Quick Change". One lucky Rush fan will receive round trip airfare to Las Vegas courtesy of Allegiant Air.
