Allen Americans News Release
ALLEN, Texas - The defending CHL champion Texas Brahmas defeated the Allen Americans 2-1 in the eighth round of a shootout this afternoon at the Allen Event Center. The game was the last regular season meeting between the clubs at the AEC and marked the first time that the visiting team won a contest in the season series. The Americans are 13 points ahead of the Brahmas in the standings with a 33-11-4 record.
Allen got things going on the power play when Ryan Fairbarn fired one by Texas goalie Brett Jaeger at 12:22 of the first period. Fairbarn's twelfth goal of the year was the only goal in the period even though Allen heavily tested Jaeger with 19 shots on net. The Americans stifled the Texas offense, as Allen goalie Chris Whitley, who returned today after a one-game stint with the Texas Stars, made five saves in the opening 20 minutes.
The middle frame was relatively quiet until Texas managed to tie the game with less than one minute remaining in the period. Texas defenseman Luke Sellars recorded his fourth goal of the season.
Allen outshot the Brahmas 12-6 in the third period but could not light the lamp.
Both goalies held the opposing teams scoreless in overtime, and the clubs headed to a shootout for the third time this season, each team winning one a piece in the extra period before today.
Colton Yellow Horn and Nino Musitelli scored in the shootout for Allen, while Luke Sellars and Lee Jubinville had tallies for Texas. Forced into three extra rounds, Brahma Matt Pierce broke the tie after his shot went by Whitley in the eighth round, giving the Brahmas a 2-1 win.
Prior to today's afternoon contest, David McKee was placed on goaltender IR, retroactive to Feb. 13.
The Americans travel to Arizona for back-to-back games Wednesday and Thursday. Both games begin at 8:05 p.m. CST. Fans are invited to watch the away games at Boston's Gourmet Pizza in McKinney.
