Texas Stars News Release
CEDAR PARK, TX - Jordie Benn tallied the game-winning power play goal and added an assist, while goaltender Cristopher Nilstorp stopped 25-of-26 shots to lead the Texas Stars to a 3-1 victory over the San Antonio Rampage Saturday night at Cedar Park Center.
San Antonio opened the scoring at 6:31. Drew Shore pounced on a rebound and slid the puck by Texas goaltender Cristopher Nilstop to put the Rampage in front 1-0. The Stars settled in and tied the game late in the period thanks to a pair of dynamic rookies. Reilly Smith laid down a beautiful drop pass in the right faceoff circle and Alex Chiasson fired a wrister past San Antonio netminder Dov Grumet-Morris at 19:06 to level the contest at one. Texas outshot the visitors 12-5 and the Rampage were unsuccessful during the frame's only power play.
The Stars continued to rip shots at Grumet-Morris in the second period and Jordie Benn put Texas on top, 2-1, with a 5-on-3 power play goal. Benn unleashed a wrist shot from the high slot and buried the puck in the top left corner of the net at 12:18 to tally his seventh goal of the season. The Stars unloaded 16 shots in the period and went 1-for-2 with the man advantage.
Matt Fraser's hot stick gave Texas a commanding two-goal lead midway through the final session. Fraser took a Colton Sceviour cross-slot pass and found the roof of the twine from the left faceoff circle at 12:46 to record his team-leading 16th goal of the season and extend the Stars advantage to 3-1. Texas killed off a penalty with less than five minutes remaining and thwarted a San Antonio empty net attack to finish off a 3-1 victory. The Stars have now won five straight games and are 5-0-0-0 against the Rampage this season.
Texas goaltender Cristopher Nilstorp denied 25-of-26 shots to earn his 16th win of the year, while San Antonio starter Dov Grumet-Morris stopped 35-of-38 shots in the loss. The Stars outshot the visitors 38-26 and finished 1-for-2 on the power play, while San Antonio went 0-for-2 with the man advantage.
Texas kicks off a six-game road trip with a Sunday, January 13th tilt against the Oklahoma City Barons at 4:00 p.m. at Cox Convention Center. The Stars return home on Saturday, January 26th to square off with the San Antonio Rampage at 7:00 p.m. at Cedar Park Center.
