
Monsters Slip Past Aeros 2-1

Houston, TX - The Houston Aeros (18-13-3-3, 42 points) were defeated by the Lake Erie Monsters (20-16-2-1, 43 points) 2-1 on Saturday night in front of 9,291 fans at Toyota Center. Lake Erie right wing Dean Strong broke a 1-1 tie with 4:15 remaining in regulation, pushing the Monsters past the Aeros. Lake Erie goalie Sami Aittokallio (10-8-0) stopped 26 of 28 Houston shots, helping the Monsters sweep the season series. Aeros goalie Darcy Kuemper (5-4-2) stopped 29 of 32 in the defeat. Aeros forwards Johan Larsson and Jason Zucker each had a goal in the loss, as Houston dropped to 12-6-1-2 at Toyota Center this season. Defenseman Kris Fredheim set up both Houston goals. Houston stays home at 5:05 p.m. on Sunday to host Charlotte at Toyota Center.
Lake Erie took a 1-0 lead at 7:37 of the first period on a goal by defenseman Karl Stollery. Right wing Dean Strong had the assist on the goal. Houston tied it up at 1-1 at 14:01 of the first on a Jason Zucker power-play goal. Charlie Coyle sent a cross-ice pass to Zucker, who one-timed it past goalie Sami Aittokallio for his 16th goal of the season. Defenseman Kris Fredheim had the second assist on the goal.
After a scoreless second period, Lake Erie regained the lead at 9:08 of the third period. Forward Paul Carey stickhandled into the crease and put in his own rebound for the 2-1 lead. Gabriel Beaupre added the lone assist on Carey's sixth goal of the season. Houston tied the game 2-2 with a power-play goal at 14:15 of the third period. Center Johan Larsson blasted a slap shot from the top of the right-wing face-off circle, beating Sami Aittokallio. Fredheim and Chay Genoway each picked up an assist on the Aeros second goal of the evening, Larsson's 10th of the year. Lake Erie countered to move ahead 3-2 after Dean Strong connected for a power-play goal at 15:45.
The Aeros host the Charlotte Checkers at 5:05 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 13. On Sunday, the team will hand out photos of "Chilly" to the first 2,000 fans, celebrating "Chilly's Birthday". Also, every Sunday throughout the season is a Family Day, where fans may purchase four tickets, parking and four Aeros prizes starting at $54. Houston will embark on a six-game road trip, returning back to Toyota Center after the All-Star break. The Aeros will host Texas on Friday, Feb. 1 at 7 p.m.
