Rivermen Rally for OT Win

January 12, 2013 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Peoria Rivermen News Release

After falling behind 2-0, the Peoria Rivermen scored the final three goals of the game to storm back and beat the Grand Rapids Griffins 3-2 in overtime. Peoria killed off seven of the eight Griffins power plays and held them scoreless for the final 38 minutes of regulation as they mounted their comeback.

Sergey Andronov scored the game-winning goal for the second night in a row as he backhanded home a rebound with 2:30 remaining in overtime. Jake Allen made 31 saves, including 26 in the first two periods, for the victory

The penalty problems started early for Peoria as they were forced to kill off 1:29 of five-on-three time just 2:55 into the game. Less than two minutes after the successful kill, Mitch Callahan banged in a rebound to give Grand Rapids the lead at 5:39. The Rivermen were forced to kill off a total of six Griffins' power plays in the first period alone and were outshot 12-5 in the opening period.

Grand Rapids cashed in on their seventh power play of the game just 1:50 into the second period. Landon Ferraro's shot appeared to be in Allen's pads but after initially ruling no-goal, referee Keith Kaval reviewed the play and awarded the Griffins a 2-0 lead.

Peoria's response came just 28 seconds later. T.J. Hensick fed Adam Cracknell in the high-slot as he snapped home his ninth goal of the season at 2:18 of the second. Derek Nesbitt earned the secondary assist.

Still in the second period, Brett Sonne's first goal of the season tied the game, 2-2, at 8:26. After Evgeny Grachev stole the puck at center ice, he pushed it ahead to send Sonne and Tyler Shattock in on a two-on-none break. Sonne slipped the puck between the legs of Thomas McCollum to even the score.

The score held steady until the midway point of overtime when David Shield's shot produced a rebound in the crease for Andronov. His seventh of the season gave Peoria their third straight win against Grand Rapids this season.

The Griffins outshot Peoria 33-26 while Peoria finished without a goal on their five power-play chances.

The Rivermen take on the Milwaukee Admirals on Sunday at 5:00 p.m. at the BMO Harris Bradley Center. All games can be heard on CD Country 107.9 FM or online through www.rivermen.net.
