
Texas closes out regular season with loss

Houston, TX - The Texas Stars (46-27-3-4, 99 Points) were defeated by the Houston Aeros (34-33-7-5, 80 Points) 4-2 on Saturday night in front of 8,508 fans at the Toyota Center. The Aeros scored three goals in the last seven minutes of the game to erase a 2-1 deficit and give Houston its third win of the year over Texas. Stars forwards Warren Peters and Raymond Sawada each scored in the team's regular season finale. Stars goalie Richard Bachman (4-4-0) stopped 39 of 42 Houston shots in loss, while Aeros' goalie Anton Khudobin (14-18-4) stopped 17 Texas shots in the win. The Stars start the first round of the Calder Cup playoffs, hosting Game 1 against Rockford this coming Friday at 7:30 PM at Cedar Park Center.
After a scoreless first period of play, the Aeros scored the first goal of the night at 9:08 of the second period. J.M Daoust led a two-on-one rush into the Texas zone. Daoust found Andy Hilbert on the left wing for the 1-0 Aeros lead on his eighth goal of the season. Stars goalie Richard Bachman set a new team record for saves in a period, turning aside 23 Houston shots in the middle frame.
In the third period, the Stars scored twice in a 1:43 span to take their first lead of the game. Center Warren Peters scored his 20th goal of the year at 4:00 of the final frame. Peters' power-play goal was assisted by Garrett Stafford and Richard Bachman. The Stars took a 2-1 lead at 5:43 of the third period when Raymond Sawada scored his eighth goal of the season. Sawada's tally was set up by Peters and Andrew Hutchinson. Houston would start its rally at 13:08, when Nathan Smith tipped in his eight goal of the season for the 2-2 tie. Moments later, Carson MacMillan tipped a shot in front of the Texas net for his fourth goal of the season and a 3-2 Aeros lead. Danny Irmen scored an empty-net goal with 24 seconds left in regulation for the 4-2 final score.
The Stars will host Game 1 of the West Division Semi Finals on Friday, April 16th at 7:30 PM as they begin a best of seven first round playoff series with the Rockford IceHogs. Game 2 is at Cedar Park Center on Saturday, April 17th at 7:00 PM. The series shifts to Rockford for Games 3 and 4, as well as Game 5 if necessary. The series would return to Cedar Park Center for Games 6 and 7.
