Pirates Finishes Regular Season Victorious

Portland, Maine - Mark Mancari and Paul Byron each collected a goal and an assist to lead the Portland Pirates to a 5-2 win over the Worcester Sharks in an American Hockey League game played today in front of 5,779 at the Cumberland County Civic Center.

Philip Gogulla, Felix Schutz and Cody McCormick also scored for the Pirates while Brad Larsen collected two assists. The Pirates completed the regular season with a 45-24-7-4 record and will take on the Manchester Monarchs in the opening round of the 2010 Calder Cup playoff beginning Friday at the CCCC.

Danny Groulx and Brandon Mashinter scored for the Sharks, who finished the campaign with a 49-24-3-3 record. The Sharks will play the Lowell Devils in the opening round of the post season.

Gogulla started the scoring three minutes into the game only to be answered 19 second later by a long distance strike by Groulx. The Pirates grabbed the lead back again with a pair of goals in the later stages of the period as Mancari and Schutz connected to give Portland a 3-1 lead after one. Byron scored the lone goal of the second to send the Pirates into the third with a 4-1 advantage. McCormick and Mashinter rounded out the scoring with third period goals.

The game represented the conclusion of the Unum Challenge which finished tied 4-4.

Worcester out shot the Pirates 34-33 in the game as J.P. Lamoureux earned the victory.

The Allied Home Mortgage Three Stars of the game were all from the Pirates. Mancari was the first, Larsen the second and Lamoureux the third.

The Pirates will begin their pursuit of the 2010 Calder Cup in a best-of-seven series against the Manchester Monarchs beginning Friday, April 16th at 7 p.m. at the Cumberland County Civic Center. Pirates Playoff Hockey powered by Time Warner Cable continues with Game 2 of the series Saturday, April 18th at 7 p.m. at the CCCC. Games 5 and 7, if necessary, will be played April 22nd and 25th at 7 p.m. at the CCCC. Advance tickets for the opening round of Pirates Playoff Hockey powered by Time Warner Cable are $16 for Main Deck, $13 for Quarter Deck or $11 for Senior/Student/Youth in either seating location and are available at the Civic Center box office or by calling (207) 775-3458. Game day pricing will increase $2 per ticket in each level.
