April 11, 2010 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Binghamton Senators News Release
WILKES-BARRE, TWP., P.A. - On the last day of the regular season the B-Sens were playing for nothing but pride. With the good run they've had these past few weeks the Senators were just looking to end this season on a high note. Unfortunately they did not get the win on their final night with a 3-0 loss to the Penguins.
The first period consisted of hard hitting by both teams which put up 20 minutes of roughing penalties on the board. The fights weren't the only bright spot of the first, but both goaltenders put on a show with some eye catching stops. The first goal of the period didn't come until the 18:00 mark. Joe Vitale shot it right past Sens goalie, Mike Brodeur, to get the 1-0 lead. Konstantin Pushkarev and Chris Lee both picked up the assists.
The B-Sens did not have to upper hand in the second period with only having 2 shots on goal. Both goalies continued to be the stars of the game especially Senators goalie, Mike Brodeur. He shot down all of the Penguins 10 shots in the period.
Just 1:30 into the third period Dustin Jeffrey made it 2-0. He got a pass right in front of the night from Mark Letestu and was able to shoot it right over Brodeur. Nick Johnson was credited with the other assist.
The B-Sens pulled goaltender Mike Brodeur with about three minutes to go in the game to try and erase the two goal deficit. The Pens took full advantage and scored an empty net goal at 17:50 of the third. Deryk Engelland shot the puck from inside the Penguins zone that passed all of the B-Sens players to go into the empty net. Ben Lovejoy picked up the assist.
The B-Sens were held scoreless for their final game of the season as Penguins goalie Brad Thiessen stopped all 28 shots and received first star honors. The B-Sens finished their 2009-2010 season with a record of 36-35-6-3 and won 14 out of their last 20 games to finish the season strong.
