Rochester Honkers News Release
(Rochester, MN)-The 2012 MLB First Year Players Draft results are in. Five current Rochester Honkers and five past Honkers were selected from June 4th through June 6th.
Among the players selected was local Rochester kid Mitchell Brown, drafted by the Cleveland Indians in the 2nd round (79th overall). Brown, a pitcher who was a senior at Century High School this year, is signing with the Cleveland organization, so he will not pitch for the Honkers in 2012.
Same goes for the freshman pitcher from San Jacinto College (CA), Anthony Banda. Banda was selected in the 10th round (335th overall) by the Milwaukee Brewers.
The three other 2012 Rochester Honkers players chosen were Neosho County CC sophomores Adam Giacalone and Matt Strahm, and University of Illinois junior Kevin Johnson.
Giacalone, a first baseman/pitcher picked in the 16th round (515th overall) by the Milwaukee Brewers, has played in two games for the 2012 Honkers going 1 for 7 with a double and a RBI. Giacalone also made one appearance out of the bullpen in which he tossed 3.0 innings, striking out two and surrendering one unearned run. Giacalone will not be back in action for Rochester in 2012 as he is signing with Milwaukee.
Strahm, a left-handed pitcher, was chosen in the 21st round (643rd overall) by the Kansas City Royals and Johnson, a right-handed pitcher, was picked by the New Yankees in the 31st round (967th overall). Neither Strahm nor Johnson has played thus far for the Honkers.
Four players from the 2011 Rochester Honkers roster were drafted including pitchers Austin House from New Mexico (14th round, 439th overall, Oakland Athletics) and Ben Klimesh from Trinity University in Texas (15th round, 472nd overall, Cincinnati Reds), catcher Aaron Jones from Oregon (18th round, 558th overall, Colorado Rockies), and 3B Damek Tomscha from Iowa Western CC (19th round, 584th overall, Chicago Cubs).
Joey Housey, a Honker right-handed pitcher in 2010 from Oregon, was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in the 27th round (832nd overall).
