Tampa Drops Opener in Bradenton, 10-2

BRADENTON, Fla. - Omar Carrizales delivered a game-tying two-run double in the second, but Tampa's offense was stymied the rest of the way as the Bradenton Marauders scored eight unanswered run to run away with a 10-2 win in the opener of a four-game series on Thursday night at LECOM Park.
RHP Glenn Otto started for Tampa (20-26) and needed 37 pitches to get through the first inning. Cal Mitchell bounced a base hit off the first base bag and Lucas Tancas drew a two-out walk before Mitchell scored on a double to left by Randolph Gassaway. Tancas crossed the plate on a misplay by left-fielder Tyler Hill, giving Bradenton a 2-0 lead.
Jason Lopez and Steven Sensley hit back-to-back singles with one out in the second. Both advanced on a groundout by Angel Aguilar, and Carrizales followed with a double over the head of left-fielder Chris Sharpe, tying the game at 2-2.
After a 22-pitch second inning, Otto allowed the Marauders to take back the lead in the third. Sharpe lined a leadoff double and, one out later, scored when Gassaway reached on an infield single and advanced on a throwing error by third-baseman Oswaldo Cabrera. Gassaway later scored on an infield single by Dylan Busby, giving Bradenton a 4-2 lead.
Otto (L, 1-2) logged his shortest outing of the season, yielding four runs (two earned) on five hits in two and two-third innings. The 23-year-old walked three, struck out three and threw 50 of 79 pitches for strikes.
RHP Greg Weissert relieved Otto and retired the first four batters he faced before walking Sharpe to open the bottom of the fifth. Tancas followed with a single, and Sharpe stole third. Tancas then stole second, and Sharpe stole home on a throw down to second. Weissert struck out three-straight to end the frame and finished with five punchouts in two and a third.
LHP Domingo Robles (W, 5-5) posted his ninth quality start for Bradenton (26-20), holding the Tapons to two earned runs on four hits in six innings. The 21-year-old walked three, struck out five and threw 64 of 93 pitches for strikes.
LHP Dalton Lehnen took over for Weissert in the sixth, and Travis Swaggerty reached on a fielder's choice before stealing second and scoring on a two-out single by Mitchell.
A base hit and back-to-back walks loaded the bases for the Marauders with no outs in the seventh. Lehnen nearly escaped, getting a pop out and a force out at the plate, but Jesse Medrano belted a two-out, bases-clearing double to the wall in left-center. Swaggerty followed with an RBI single to center, giving Bradenton an eight-run lead.
RHPs Ryan Valdes, Shea Murray and Hunter Stratton combined to hold the Tarpons to one hit and three walks while punching out four in the final three frames
RHP Hobie Harris retired all four batters he faced, notching a strikeout in relief of Lehnen.
Tampa will look to even the series when RHP Janson Junk (2-0, 2.31) squares off against RHP Cody Bolton (5-2, 1.90) on Friday at 6:30 p.m. Live play-by-play of the action will be available on the Tampa Tarpons Baseball Network.
