CLEARWATER, FL: A clutch three-run homer from Chavez Young in the bottom of the eighth spoiled a solid pitching effort from RHP Freddy Tarnok and a 13-hit outburst from the Florida Fire Frogs in their 8-5 setback to the Dunedin Blue Jays on Thursday night at Jack Russell Memorial Stadium.
Young launched his third of the season off RHP Kurt Hoekstra over the fence in right to secure a comeback win for the Blue Jays.
Hoekstra (0-1) walked two and surrendered the home run in the eighth while getting saddled with the loss.
The scoring began in the first with Dunedin's Cullen Large. His sacrifice fly off Tarnok plated Cal Stevenson and made it 1-0 Dunedin. He was also responsible for the equalizer in the third, putting a ball in play to short that scored Kevin Vicuna and knotted the game at 2.
Hagen Owenby made an instantaneous impact for the Fire Frogs offense once again on Thursday. His two-run double in the second against LHP Nick Allgeyer gave Florida a temporary lead, 2-1. He went 2-3 on the night and drew a walk.
The Fire Frogs forced Allgeyer out of the game in the sixth when four of the first five men notched hits. The latter hit of that stretch came from Brett Langhorne, who singled in Jefrey Ramos to give Florida the lead again. Riley Delgado brought Izzy Wilson across versus new pitcher RHP Emerson Jimenez with a single of his own as part of a three-hit night to make it 4-2 Fire Frogs.
Ramos had his first four-hit performance since April 27th, going 4-5 with two runs scored.
Allgeyer permitted four earned runs for the second time this season and allowed eight hits and two walks with six strikeouts mixed in during his 5 and 1/3's stanzas.
Ryan Noda's RBI single in the sixth brought the D-Jays to within 4-3.
In Tarnok's first quality start of the season, he gave up three earned runs, six hits, two walks, and fanned five over six innings of work while not factoring in the decision.
Cal Stevenson's two-run inside-the-park homer in the home half of the seventh off RHP Troy Bacon erased the deficit and propelled the Blue Jays into the lead, 5-4.
Delgado quickly evened the game at 5 with another knock in the eighth before Young's big fly in the bottom half.
RHP Dany Jimenez (3-1) halted the Fire Frogs rally in the eighth and retired four total batters to pick up the win.
NOTES: Florida has now lost four consecutive games for the second time this season, this being the first occasion since April 23rd-26th. William Contreras drew a walk but saw his season-best eight-game hit streak come to an end.
NEXT UP: The four-game set between the Fire Frogs and Blue Jays resumes Friday evening at 6:30 p.m. LHP Hayden Deal (2-2, 1.32) will make his ninth start of the season.
