TACOMA, Wash. -- Hisashi Iwakuma turned in a 5.2-inning rehab start as the Tacoma Rainiers pieced together an 8-4 series-opening win over the Las Vegas 51s at Cheney Stadium on Tuesday night.

Iwakuma limited the 51s to one run on five hits and struck out six in his second consecutive Major League rehab start with Tacoma,. The right-hander exited the game with two outs in the sixth due to a blister on his throwing hand. He was placed on the Seattle Mariners disabled list with a strained lat muscle on April 24.

At the plate, Tacoma bolted ahead 2-0 in the bottom of the first inning. After the lineup collected singles in their first three at-bats, Stefen Romero cleared the way for Chris Taylor to score from third after grounding into a force out. Leon Landry added another run when he plated James Jones on an errant force attempt one batter later.

Romero's RBI single in the third upped the Rainiers lead to 3-0 before Las Vegas' Alex Castellanos dialed up an RBI double in the fourth. Tacoma countered with five combined runs over their next two frames, including run-scoring singles from James Jones, Chris Taylor, and Steve Baron that helped bolster the lead to 8-1 through the fifth.

First baseman Jesus Montero led the team after going 4-for-5 with a double. He now leads the Pacific Coast League with 97 hits through 75 games played this season. The outfielder Romero was tops on the club after driving in three runs. Taylor, Jones, Landry, and Zack Shank each contributed two hits in Tacoma's 16-hit effort.

The Rainiers (39-40) host the second game of the team's four-game series with Las Vegas (45-34) at 7:05 p.m. tomorrow, July 1. Right-hander Jordan Pries (3-1, 4.64) takes the mound for Tacoma in the tilt. The 51s are expected to counter with right-hander Matthew Bowman (5-8, 5.73).
