Today's Game: The Oklahoma City Dodgers open July and continue their four-game series against the Memphis Redbirds at 7:05 p.m. at AutoZone Park, trying to take a 2-0 lead in the series.
Last Game: Kyle Jensen and Darnell Sweeney each hit home runs and the Dodgers pitching staff kept Memphis scoreless over the final eight innings, leading to a 2-1 win at AutoZone Park Monday night. The Redbirds took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning, when Dan Johnson sent a home run into the right field porch. The Dodgers responded with a home run of their own in the second inning. With two outs, Jensen connected on his eighth homer of the season out to left field. Another solo shot put the Dodgers in front in the third inning. Again with two outs, Sweeney went the opposite way out to right field into the porch, giving OKC a 2-1 lead. Dodgers starting pitcher Eric Surkamp (4-2) tied his season high with 6.0 innings, holding the Redbirds to one run and five hits. He finished with three walks and five strikeouts, and only had two runners reach scoring position. The trio of Brandon League, Juan Gonzalez, and Ryan Buchter held the Redbirds scoreless over the final three innings, never allowing the tying run to move into scoring position. Buchter earned his second save of the season after throwing a scoreless ninth inning. Memphis starting pitcher Tyler Lyons delivered a solid outing, but ended up with the loss. Lyons (5-4) allowed two runs and seven hits over 6.2 innings. He struck out seven and did not allow a walk.
Today's Probable Pitcher: Brandon Beachy makes his third start with Oklahoma City as he continues his MLB rehab assignment...Beachy is coming off the second Tommy John surgery of his career, which forced him to miss the entire 2014 season. After spending the first seven years of his career with the Atlanta Braves, Beachy inked a one-year deal with the Dodgers in February...He pitched 4.0 innings Friday in Nashville, allowing one run and two hits, with three walks and two strikeouts in a no decision...Over his three starts thus far between OKC and High-A Rancho Cucamonga, Beachy has allowed just one run and three hits over 7.2 IP. Opponents are just 3-for-24 overall, 1-for-12 with runners on base, and 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position...He previously faced Memphis in Bricktown on June 21 during his first start with OKC. Beachy threw 2.0 scoreless innings, allowing one hit with one walk and three strikeouts. He exited relatively early since he reached his pitch limit after facing seven batters...Tonight Beachy is expected to throw around 75 pitches or five innings.
Against the Redbirds: 2015: 4-1 2014: 10-6 All-time: 146-132 In MEM: 60-79
The Dodgers have won four of the first five meetings, notching at least 10 hits in each victory...During the most recent series between the teams, June 18-21 in Bricktown, the Dodgers won each of the first three games before Memphis avoided the sweep in the finale. OKC batted .358 and scored 23 runs during the four-game set. Scott Schebler led the Dodgers offense, going 9-for-12 with six RBI, and he hit a walk-off homer in the series opener...OKC has finished with a winning record in Memphis each of the past two seasons, compiling an 11-5 record at AutoZone Park. Prior to 2013, OKC had not finished a season with a winning record in the Bluff City since 1999.
Nifty Fifty: Tuesday's win was the Dodgers' 50th of the season and it came in the team's 77th game, as they became the fastest OKC team to 50 wins during the PCL era. The 2012 squad had previously been the fastest, reaching 50 wins through 86 games...The Dodgers are one of only two teams in the Minors with at least 50 wins. The Double-A Corpus Christi Hooks pace the Minors with 51 victories.
Road Warriors: The Dodgers own the league's best road record at 26-14. They are in the midst of a stretch where 25 of 33 games are on the road (2-3).
All-Star Quartet: Earlier today, four OKC Dodgers were named PCL All-Stars and will participate in the Triple-A All-Star Game on Wednesday, July 15 at Werner Park in Omaha. Catcher Austin Barnes and second baseman Darnell Sweeney were elected as starters, and reliever Ryan Buchter and shortstop Corey Seager were selected as reserves. It's the first time four OKC players have been named to the Triple-A All-Star Game...The foursome will be joined by hitting coach Franklin Stubbs, who was previously named to the PCL's coaching staff.
Bidding June Adieu: The Dodgers went 16-12 in June and compiled a 16-7 record after beginning the month on a five-game losing streak. The .274 team average was by far their highest monthly clip of the season (April - .223, May - .251). They also posted a 3.86 ERA and hit 25 home runs -- their highest monthly home run total since hitting 32 homers in June 2014.
Darwin's Evolution: Darwin Barney is currently riding a season-best five-game hitting streak, going 10-for-21 (.476) with three multi-hit games. Since rejoining the OKC Dodgers, Barney has hit safely in nine of 10 contests, recording six multi-hit games. He's batting .462 (18x39) with a home run, three doubles, five RBI, and eight runs scored.
Steady Sweeney: Last night Darnell Sweeney went 2-for-4 with a solo home run that proved to be the difference in the game. In the process, he picked up his team-leading 25th multi-hit game of the season. Sweeney finished June with 37 hits -- a total that ranked fourth in the PCL. He enters tonight ranked among the top 10 in the league in stolen bases (25, 1st), hits (82, 6th), and doubles (20, T-10th). The leadoff man also leads the team with 39 runs scored and is second with 31 RBI.
Seager's Surge: Corey Seager has matched his longest hitting streak since joining OKC at seven games (previously May 12-18 and June 2-8). He is 9-for-26 (.346) with two home runs and four RBI during the stretch.
By the Buchter: Ryan Buchter closed out last night's game with scoreless ninth inning, notching his second save of the season. Buchter has turned in 14 consecutive scoreless appearances and has only been scored upon once in 23 outings. Over his last 16.0 innings, he's allowed just eight hits with four walks and 17 strikeouts. Buchter's 0.63 ERA and .172 opponent average are best among PCL relievers.
RISPy Business: OKC went 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position last night, marking the first time the team won despite not collecting a hit with a runner in scoring position since a 3-2 victory against Iowa on July 5, 2014 at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark (0-for-13)...The Dodgers are 3 for their last 37 with runners in scoring position.
