Fresno Snaps Losing Streak With Impressive Offensive Effort

July 1, 2015 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Fresno Grizzlies News Release

EL PASO, Texas - The Fresno Grizzlies (45-34) generated only nine total runs in their recent series against Reno, but exploded for double-digits Tuesday night in a 10-5 victory over the El Paso Chihuahuas (39-39) in front of 7,339 fans at Southwest University Park. All 10 Fresno hitters that had a plate appearance recorded a hit and eight of 10 collected an RBI. Nolan Fontana led the club with three hits, while Tyler Heineman and Andrew Aplin both picked up two RBI apiece.

Those three bottom of the order hitters were key in snapping the Grizzlies four-game losing streak. Together, Fontana, Heineman, and Aplin combined to go 7-13 with a double, five RBI, two walks, and three runs scored.

The middle of the order also contributed as Matt Duffy singled to lead off the fourth and scored on a triple from L.J. Hoes. Two batters later, Fontana drove in Hoes with a single to right to extend Fresno's lead to 3-0.

The game was split wide open in the sixth when Fresno put across five runs on six hits. Hoes walked, Jonathan Villar singled, and then Fontana put down a bunt single to load the bases for Tyler Heineman, who singled home a run. El Paso yanked starter James Needy for Nick Vincent, but Andrew Aplin attacked the reliever for a single to shallow right to score Villar and Fontana. Tony Kemp followed with a sacrifice fly that scored Heineman, and then Matt Duffy punched a two-out single to score Aplin and make it 8-0. The RBI single by Duffy gave him 55 RBI on the season, which is the most by an active Fresno player.

Working with a lead most of the night, starter Brady Rodgers was fantastic. He didn't allow a hit until Rymer Liriano put a broken bat single into left with one out in the fifth, and he didn't surrender a run until the bottom of the seventh. The start provided him his sixth win of the season and fourth quality start. Rodgers went 4-1 with a 3.07 ERA (10 ER/29.1 IP) over five starts in the month of June.

The Grizzlies will look to keep their offensive momentum going tomorrow night in game two of the series against El Paso. Right-hander Mike Hauschild (1-1, 3.38) takes the mound for Fresno, while righty Chris Smith (1-2, 3.04) toes the rubber for El Paso. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. PT in El Paso.
