OKC Magic Number Down to One despite Loss

The Oklahoma City Comets began their final regular season road trip with an 11-5 loss to the El Paso Chihuahuas Tuesday night at Southwest University Park. El Paso (24-46/59-86) opened the series with a four-run second inning, scoring the latter three runs on a bases-clearing double with two outs and two strikes by Mason McCoy. Chris Newell homered out to center field in the fifth inning to get the Comets (44-26/85-59) on the board and cut the deficit to 4-1. The Chihuahuas scored seven runs between the fifth through seventh innings, including a five-run barrage in the sixth inning, to take an 11-1 advantage. The Comets scored four runs int he ninth inning with a two-run double by Ryan Ward followed by a two-run blast by Ryan Fitzgerald.

Of Note: -Although the Comets lost, so did Sugar Land, putting OKC's magic number to win the PCL second half title down to one. The Comets can clinch the title with a win Wednesday afternoon or a Sugar Land loss Wednesday night.

-The Comets have lost back-to-back games following a team-record 14-game winning streak. Over the two games, they have been outscored, 16-5.

-By hitting a home run in the ninth inning, Ryan Fitzgerald set a new OKC Bricktown era single-season record with 165 hits...Fitzgerald also matched a career-high with his 16th homer of the season, last reached during both the 2021 and 2022 campaigns while with the Boston Red Sox organization...He now has 99 RBI this season.

-Zach Ehrhard went 1-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to seven games, tying his season high initially set May 13-23. During the streak, Ehrhard is 13-for-27 (.481).

-The Comets allowed their most runs since giving up 13 runs Aug. 11 vs. Albuquerque. Tuesday's defeat was the team's largest since falling in that same game, 13-7, against the Isotopes.

-Oklahoma City's eight-game road winning streak came to an end.
