Trenton Devils News Release
ELMIRA, N.Y. - Chris Poli's second goal of the game with 36 seconds remaining in overtime gave the Trenton Devils a 5-4 win over the Elmira Jackals Saturday night at First Arena. With the win, the Devils swept the Jackals in the preseason.
The Jackals struck first with a power play goal by Steve Yetman at the 5:39 mark of the first period. Afterwards, Poli scored his first of the evening at 12:52 of the first to tie the game at one. Seventy seconds later, the Jackals tied it up on Tyler Donati's first goal of the night.
Joe Gerbe converted on a two-on-one with David Leaderer with 2:59 left in the first to tie the game at two, but the Jackals fired back with a late goal in the period to take a 3-2 lead into the first intermission.
In the second period, the Devils tied the game up again. With Trenton on the power play, Chris Dyment's slap shot off a one timer pass from Ryan Gunderson went between the legs of Rob McVicar to make it 3-3.
Donati would score his second of the night at 4:41 of the third period to give Elmira a 4-3 lead, but again the Devils would tie the contest on the man advantage as Eric Castonguay's wrist shot from the right circle beat McVicar with 12 minutes remaining in regulation.
In the overtime period, Poli scored the game winner with a shot from the high slot that eluded McVicar and gave the Devils their second 5-4 victory in as many nights.
Jeff Frazee made 33 saves to earn the victory, including 13 stops in the second period in which the Jackals were held scoreless.
The Trenton Devils begin their regular season Friday, October 17 with a 7:30 p.m. start time against the Johnstown Chiefs. To tune in to the action, go online to www.trentondevils.com and listen or watch live courtesy of B2 Networks.
