Johnstown Chiefs News Release
Johnstown, Pa. - The Johnstown Chiefs took on the Wheeling Nailers on Saturday night in their final preseason game, but fell by a score of 1-0.
Jon Grecu scored for Wheeling with just 3:11 to play in the game to seal the victory for the Nailers.
Curtis Darling made 39 saves en route to the shutout. Ian Keserich stopped 30 shots for Johnstown.
The game was marked by strong defensive play. Although both teams registered over 30 shots-39 for Johnstown and 31 for Wheeling-both goaltenders stood tall, accounting for one goal allowed on 70 total shots.
Johnstown appeared to carry the play for much of the game, out-shooting Wheeling in both the first and second period. But power play woes did in the Chiefs, as they went 0-for-7 with the man advantage.
Both teams had three power plays in the first period, but Darling and Keserich combined to keep the score at a scoreless tie.
The second period saw just four penalties, including three against Wheeling, but again both teams failed to find the net.
After allowing the late goal, the Chiefs were not without their chances to answer. Joey Olson and Matt Robinson each had shots in tight in the final seconds, but Darling turned both away to hold onto the victory.
Wheeling also suffered on the power play, going 0-for-5 on the man advantage. Both teams combined for 60 total penalty minutes and 12 power plays, but no goals.
Mark your calendars! The Chiefs open their 2008-09 home schedule on Saturday, October 18 at 7:05 against the Wheeling Nailers, and you won't want to miss a minute of the action.
