Lake Erie Crushers News Release
CRESTWOOD, Ill. -- The Lake Erie Crushers were silenced offensively on Wednesday morning at Standard Bank Stadium, as they were held to five hits in a 4-2 loss to the Windy City Thunderbolts.
The loss for the Crushers (3-2) drops their record to 3-20 all-time at Standard Bank Stadium, while the Thunderbolts (5-0) remain one of only two unbeaten teams in the Frontier League with the victory.
Lake Erie squandered a few chances to score throughout the contest, which cost them in the end. They were down one (3-2) in the fourth inning with runners at the corners and could not capitalize, and they squandered a bases loaded threat in the seventh inning as well.
Windy City jumped on the board first, in the bottom of the second. Kyle Robinson began the inning with a base hit, before advancing to second on a wild pitch. Max White's groundout moved him to third, and Matt Scioscia's groundout scored him.
The Crushers answered just a half inning later. Juan Sanchez started the inning with a double off the wall in left, and scored moments later on a Trevor Stevens single to right.
Tied at 1-1, the Thunderbolts answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning. The bases were loaded with one out, when Ryan McIntyre stroked a single through the right side of the infield to plate a pair of runs.
Lake Erie came back with a run in the top of the fourth inning. Vincent Mejia led off with a walk, and made his way to second when Ryan Hutchison was hit by a pitch. They both advanced on a double steal, and Mejia scored on a passed ball.
Windy City was able to get that run back, as they scored a big insurance run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Mike Torres walked with one out, and eventually scored on a big two-out double off the bat of Robinson.
Mikey Jannis (1-1) took the loss for Lake Erie, after allowing four runs on six hits over four innings of action. Windy City's Victor Larez (1-0) came away with the win after surrendering just two runs on four hits over five innings of action. Daniel Carela (1) worked a scoreless ninth inning to grab the save.
The Lake Erie bullpen was very good once again. The combination of Brad Duffy, Brandon Smith, Jordan McCoy and Matt Litzinger tossed four scoreless innings in relief. The Lake Erie bullpen has not allowed a run over 17.2 innings of work this season.
Kevin Berard led the way for the Crushers offensively, going 2-for-4 on the day with a double, a single, and also walked. Stevens had a pair of hits as well, in a 2-for-5 performance, while Hutchison reached three times in four trips to the plate.
The Crushers will finish their three game series with the Windy City Thunderbolts at Standard Bank Stadium in Crestwood, Ill., on Thursday morning. Left-hander Connor Whalen (0-0, 1.80) will start for the Crushers, and right-hander Daniel Cropper (1-0, 1.42) will start for the ThunderBolts. The first pitch is scheduled for 11:35 AM.
The Lake Erie Crushers, the 2009 Frontier League Champions, and 2011 Frontier League Organization of the year, play ball at All Pro Freight Stadium, a 5,000 capacity stadium located in Avon, Ohio.
