Rascals Win Second Series Opener
May 21, 2014 - Frontier League (FL)
River City Rascals News Release
The Rascals begin their second series of the year much like their first...with a victory! The Rascals defeated the Cornbelters in Normal, Illinois by a narrow score of 5-4. The Belters were first to draw blood with RBI hits from both second-baseman Josh Band an shortstop Santiago Chirino putting them ahead by two. On the bright side, other than those two runs, River City starter Craig Goodman pitched a strong six innings while striking out three. The Rascals were able to snatch the lead from the Cornbelters in the top of the fifth inning courtesy of a two-RBI double by Hector Crespo and an RBI groundout by leadoff hitter Eric Williams. After taking a 3-2 lead in the fifth, the score stayed the same until the eighth.
Normal starter Corey MacDonald matched Goodman most of the first five innings, allowing only three earned runs while striking out three as well. In the top of inning number eight, Rascals third-baseman Taylor Ard belted his second longball of the year doubling River City's lead. Heading into the bottom of the eighth with a two run lead, Steve Brook's bullpen ran into some issues as setup-man Nick Kennedy accrued a blown save by allowing two runs to come across for Normal via back-to-back RBI singles by Ramon Hernandez and Sam Judah.
With the game tied going into the ninth, Curran Redal and Josh Ludy both reached base for the Rascals to start the inning. Eventually Redal was able to come home on a pass ball by catcher Tyler Shover giving River City a 5-4 lead going into the bottom of the ninth. Gabriel Shaw then got the call to try and lock down save number three on the season, which he ultimately did, even though there were some tense moments as the tying run reached second on a two-out double before third-baseman Taylor Ard made a spectacular sliding play to end the game. After the series opener in Normal, River City moves to 3-1 on the season and will take the field tomorrow morning for a 10:00 am game on Normal's "Kid's Day at the Park!" Pitching for the Rascals will be right-hander Dave Stone making his second start of the young season. Make sure to tune and catch all of the action live starting at 9:35 am CT with the Rascals Pregame Show!
