Slammers Drop One 5-0 on Wednesday
May 21, 2014 - Frontier League (FL)
Joliet Slammers News Release
The Joliet Slammers-Presented by ATI Physical Therapy-lost a tough one 5-0 to Gateway on Wednesday night.
In what began as a great pitchers' dual, the Grizzlies struck first against Joliet's Andrew Busby in the 3rd inning. Jonathon Johnson drew a one-out walk and promptly stole 2nd and then 3rd base. Tommy Richards struck out and then Madison Beaird lofted a deep fly ball to right-center. Tre-von Johnson raced back and appeared to make a tremendous reaching catch, but the ball didn't stick in his glove and dropped out as his foot hit the ground. Busby retired the next seven hitters following Beaird's double.
The game stayed 1-0 through six innings as Busby was taken out after allowing just one run on 4 hits with 7 strikeouts and only one walk. The Grizzlies' Ja'Vaun West was tremendous as well. He went 7 innings and allowed no runs on 5 hits with 8 strikeouts and 1 walk to pick up the victory.
Gateway broke it open in a 4-run 7th inning against Chase Doremus. The big hit was a 3-run homer to center from catcher Garrett Vail. Joliet did have their chances offensively though, stranding four runners and having three other runners erased on double plays in the contest. The game finished in a spiffy 2:17 in front of 2,200 fans in a game that was played one hour after a thunderstorm rumbled through the St. Louis area.
The Slammers conclude their first road trip of the season on Thursday at 7:05pm vs. the Gateway Grizzlies. Joliet returns home on Friday May 23rd to open a weekend series against the Normal CornBelters. Friday night will be Superhero and Comic Book night at Silver Cross Field.
