Schwaner Shines in Otters Doubleheader Split vs. Rockford

(EVANSVILLE, INDIANA) - The Evansville Otters split a doubleheader against the Rockford Aviators on Wednesday night at historic Bosse Field. Evansville won the first game 7-2 but lost the final contest of the doubleheader 2-1.

Evansville is now 3-2 this season as Rockford stands at 2-3. The teams will meet again on Thursday night to decide the series.

Game one started with 2 =C21/2 scoreless innings until the Otters offense ignited for seven consecutive runs. Facing Rockford righty Joey Wagman, infielder Josh Allen worked a third inning walk and scored on a two-run home run from Schwaner to deep center field. The home run was the 26th in the Otters career for Schwaner and pushed Evansville ahead 2-0. Infielder Cory Urquhart brought home another run with an RBI double in the fourth and outfielder John Schultz added a sacrifice fly in the next at bat for a 4-0 advantage. Outfielder Chris Elder scored two more runs on a double in the fifth and catcher David Cruz added an RBI single in his Otters debut for the 7-0 lead.

Pitcher Robert Ramer (2-0) earned the win, yielding two runs over 5.1 innings. Reliever Chad Robinson went the final 1.2 innings to complete the Otters five run, game one win.

Game two featured a pitcher's duel between Evansville right-hander Preston Olson and Rockford righty Ryan Zimmerman. The Otters manufactured a first inning run against Zimmerman with a leadoff triple from Schultz and a Schwaner single later in the frame. It was the only run scored until the top of the seventh.

Olson held the Aviators scoreless and to just four hits in 6.0 innings. Closer Orlando Santos entered the game in the seventh but allowed a leadoff home run to designated hitter Jose Martinez and a go-ahead single to infielder Kyle Dhanani later in the inning. Down 2-1, the Otters were unable to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh and the doubleheader resulted in a split.

Thursday night will decide the series. Rockford righty Cole Green will make his season debut against Evansville right-hander Zach Petersime (0-1, 3.60 ERA). It is State Farm night sponsored by Pam Lentz and Bob Davis. First pitch is set for 6:35 pm at Bosse Field.
