Ja'Vaun West Leads Grizzlies to Shutout Win against Slammers

SAUGET, Ill. - Gateway starting pitcher Ja'Vaun West fired seven shutout innings to lead the Grizzlies to a 5-0 win against the Joliet Slammers Wednesday night at GCS Ballpark.

West (1-0), in his third season with the Grizzlies, scattered five hits and only needed 97 pitches during his seven innings. The 24-year-old struck out eight batters and walked only one to lead the Grizzlies to the series win.

Gateway's starting pitchers have gone six innings or more in each of the first five games of the season.

Madison Beaird supplied West with all the offense he would need in the third inning. Beaird drove in Jonathan Johnson on an RBI double to give Gateway (4-1) a 1-0 lead. The RBI was the fourth of the season for Beaird.

The scored stay 1-0 until Gateway busted out for four runs on three hits in the seventh inning. Richard Seigel scored on a wild pitch and Garrett Vail drove in three on his first professional home run.

Chris DeBoo pitched a scoreless eighth and Luke Westphal tossed a perfect ninth inning to secure the win.

Seigel and third baseman Niko Vasquez paced the Grizzlies with two hits each.

The Grizzlies and Slammers play the final game of the series Thursday night with Gateway looking for the sweep. It's an MVP Program night and the Ladies Night Bridal Event. Right-hander Dejai Oliver (1-0) makes the start for the Grizzlies at 7:05.
