Providence Bruins News Release
Providence, RI - The Providence Bruins defeated the Laval Rocket Sunday afternoon 4-1 in their first ever meeting with the franchise. The P-Bruins got two goals apiece from Jordan Szwarz and Anton Blidh while Zane McIntyre made the start in goal.
Providence jumped out to the lead thanks to an early power play opportunity. Danton Heinen fed Austin Czarnik, who drove hard to the net. Charlie Lindgren made the initial save, but at 8:07 Szwarz was there to put home the rebound in the crease. His fourth goal of the year gave Providence a 1-0 lead. At 10:28, the P-Bruins extended their lead thanks to Blidh's first goal of the season. Passes from Colby Cave and Tommy Cross set up Blidh at the center point. He went top left corner to give the P-Bruins a 2-0 lead into the intermission.
The second period featured no scoring, but plenty of hard hitting action. Jesse Gabrielle and Rob O'Gara brought a physical style of play to the ice, and that style helped Providence kill off three penalties in the period. The P-Bruins had their chances too, but after failing to capitalize on four power plays the teams headed to the locker with the home club up 2-0.
Szwarz extended the P-Bruins lead at 7:52 with his second goal of the game. Taking a feed from Heinen behind the net, he blasted in his fifth goal of the season to give Providence a 3-0 lead. Chris Terry got Laval on the board with a power play goal late in the game, but Blidh sealed the deal with an empty netter for his second of the game as the P-Bruins won 4-1.
McIntyre stopped 29 of 30 shots while Lindgren stopped 31 of 34. Providence was 1-7 on the power play and 5-6 on the penalty kill. The P-Bruins will hit the road for two games next weekend, as they travel to Binghamton Friday night and follow that up with a trip to Hershey Saturday.
