Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The RailRiders earned their Triple-A-best 10th shutout victory of the season on Wednesday night, blanking the Charlotte Knights 6-0 at PNC Field. The Knights, who entered the game leading the league in runs scored, batting average, on-base percentage and slugging percentage, failed to score for just the fifth time this season.

SEVVY: Luis Severino (1-0) earned his first win at any level. He struck out seven, walked just one and gave up three hits, all singles, over six scoreless innings on 75 pitches (51 strikes). He went 0-6 over seven starts with the big club to begin the year and did not record decisions in his rehab start with Advanced-A Tampa or his first 2016 appearance with SWB.

I'M JUST A CAVEMAN: Jake Cave posted a pair of hits including his fourth triple in 25 games with the RailRiders. Since his first game with this year's SWB squad on May 11, Cave has gone 29-for-96, slashing .302/.343/.531/.874. In that time, only Durham's Dayron Varona (16) has more extra-base hits than Cave (14) in the IL. Add his three triples from his month of action with Double-A Trenton to start the season, and his seven total three-basers tie him for sixth in all of MiLB. Advanced-A Tampa's Jorge Mateo stands tied for second in the minors with eight.

@THE_HIGSTER: Kyle Higashioka went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. "Higgy" entered 2016 as a .233 career hitter before slashing .286/.338/.437/.775 in 34 games as Double-A Trenton's primary catcher to start the year. After going 0-for-4 in his first 2016 Triple-A game, he has hit safely in eight straight, going 14-for-31 with slashes of .452/.469/.839/1.307. In that time he has three homers, three doubles and eight RBIs. He has caught four SWB shutouts over his 10 games behind the plate.

INTERNATIONAL (LEAGUE) MAN OF MYSTERY: The RailRiders received Tyler Austin from Double-A Trenton Saturday. He spent most of 2015 with SWB (73GP, .235/.309/.311/.620), usually playing right field. Mostly a first baseman this year at Double-A, in 50 games he slashed .260/.367/.395/.762 with a team-high 29 RBIs while ranking second on the club in doubles (10). He launched a homer in his first 2016 Triple-A plate appearance Saturday. Yesterday, he cranked another home run. He has driven in three runs in each of the last two games. In his first go-round at Triple-A in 2015, he hit eight doubles and four home runs in 299 plate appearances and 73 games played. He has three doubles and two dingers in just 20 plate appearances over his five games with this year's unit.

RISPY BUSINESS: The RailRiders went 5-for-7 with men in scoring position last night, a day after they enjoyed a 9-for-17 showing. Their 14-for-24 (.583) surge has come on the heels of a 19-for-92 (.207) drought over a 10-game span.

KNIGHTED: From 2005-13, SWB did not lose the season series to Charlotte at home or overall, going a composite 45-26 and 25-12 in NEPA. That changed with a 5-10 overall mark and 2-5 home record versus the Knights between 2014 (2-6, 1-3) and 2015 (3-4, 1-2). With a win tonight, the RailRiders will take three of four and the series from Charlotte.

GUILTY AS CHARGED: Aaron Judge went 1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored while batting third in the order. Each of his first 55 games had seen him hit in the two-hole. He has gone 10-for-22 with three doubles, four RBIs and five walks over the last six games, scoring seven runs. In that time, he has slashed .455/.556/.591/1.146. He entered Friday's game in a 7-for-60 (.117) slide with no extra-base hits (SLG .117), three RBIs, four walks (.206 OBP) and 21 strikeouts over his prior 16 games. His third-inning double on Friday ended an 0-for-24 drought. He leads the team with 29 RBIs and outfield assists.

GOING TO EXTREMES: Charlotte ranks among the IL's best in multiple offensive categories: HR (2nd, 55), slugging (2nd, .412), SB (T-2nd, 47); and lead the league in runs scored (4.66/g), batting average (.271), on-base percentage (.340) and OPS (.752). The team also ranks among the IL's worst pitching-wise: ERA (Worst, 4.87), WHIP (2nd-worst, 1.44), H/9IP (Worst, 9.7), HR (Worst, 55), K/9IP (Worst, 6.5) and K:BB ratio (2nd-worst, 1.99).
