Toledo Mud Hens News Release
Toledo lost to Pawtucket by a score of 2-1 on Thursday morning at McCoy Stadium. The Hens dropped 3 of 4 to the PawSox after only scoring six runs in four games, all of which were decided by one run.
Dustin Molleken, who last pitched out of the bullpen for the Mud Hens on June 6th, started his third game of the 2016 season. The tall righty only lasted three innings, as he piled up pitch after pitch walking three, striking out two, allowing two hits and two runs en route to his second loss of the season.
Sean O'Sullivan, making his seventh start of the season for the PawSox, pitched into the ninth inning for his fourth win of the season. O'Sullivan, who previously made two starts for the Boston Red Sox before being designated for assignment, surrendered eight hits with only one being of the extra-base variety while striking out five, walking one, and allowing only one run.
Both pitchers utilized 6-4-3 double plays in their respected first innings to get out of jams and maintain a scoreless game.
Pawtucket jumped ahead in the third inning thanks to a leadoff single courtesy of Deven Marrero, a Dan Butler walk, and a Jose Vinicio bunt single intertwined with a Dustin Molleken throwing error to make it 1-0. The next PawSox batter was Justin Maxwell who lofted a sac fly to right field plating Dan Butler and making it 2-0 Pawtucket.
Drake Britton came on in the fourth to relieve Molleken, pitching tremendously through two innings. Angel Nesbitt made quick work of Pawtucket in the seventh; Kyle Ryan was summoned in the seventh and got out of a bases loaded one-out jam by inducing two groundball outs to keep it a 2-0 game. The final Toledo pitcher to make an appearance was Preston Guilmet, and just like the rest of his Hen Pen pals, he pitched a shutout in relief.
The Mud Hens had their best scoring chance in the ninth inning when Steven Moya led off with a perfectly placed bloop double to left field followed by a Chad Huffman walk. Pawtucket sensed some danger and called upon Kyle Martin out of their bullpen to get the final three outs. Two batters later led to a Casey McGehee RBI single to right field making it 2-1 with runners on the corners and one out, but Martin induced a Jordany Valdespin soft ground ball back to the pitcher's mound to begin a 1-6-3 game-ending double play.
After dropping three of four against Pawtucket, Toledo is back at it in Rochester Friday night with the first pitch slated for 7:05 p.m. at Frontier Field, as Buck Farmer looks to pick up his first win in a Mud Hens uniform during the 2016 season.
Toledo Tidbits:
Hen Pen Bringing the Heat- The Toledo bullpen continues to dominant in the first half of the 2016 season. The Hen pen pitched five scoreless innings striking out five and only allowing three hits.
JaCoby Came to Play- JaCoby Jones has made the most of his first four games with the Mud Hens, as he has hit safely in all four games going 5-for-15 with 1 home run and 2 runs scored. Jones has also shown off his athleticism in the outfield making tough plays look like a walk in the JaCoby Jone's park.
All-Star Game Voting- Triple-A All-Star Game voting is under way and your Toledo Mud Hens need YOUR votes. Send the likes of Steven Moya (leading the IL with 12 home runs), Chad Huffman (leading the IL with 37 RBI), Casey McGehee (5th in the IL with a .315 batting average), and Preston Guilmet (a Hen pen hurler with a stingy 0.88 ERA). All-Star Game voting will remain open until June 26.
