Lehigh Valley IronPigs News Release
The Gwinnett bullpen tossed five scoreless innings as the Lehigh Valley IronPigs (32-28) dropped the series finale to the Braves (27-34) by a score of 2-1 on Thursday afternoon at Coolray Field.
LHP Matt Marksberry (2.2 IP, 2 H, BB, 4 K) and RHP Rob Wooten (2.1 IP, H, 3 K) combined to toss the five shutout frames. Marksberry earned the win for Gwinnett to even his record at 2-2 on the year while Wooten notched his first save.
The Pigs had the tying run at second with one out in the top of the ninth, but Wooten fanned Emmanuel Burriss and got Darnell Sweeney to ground out and end the game.
In the top of the seventh, the IronPigs had the bases loaded with two outs, but Wooten got Taylor Featherston (2-4) to pop out to first and end the threat.
The Pigs jumped out to an early 1-0 lead with a run in the second as Andrew Knapp led off with a double, advanced to third on a groundout and scored on Will Venable's sac fly.
The double extended Knapp's hitting streak to eight games.
In the bottom of the third, Gwinnett had runners at second and third with two outs and on a grounder that was bobbled by Sweeney, both runs scored to give the Braves a 2-1 lead.
IronPigs starter Zach Eflin (5-2) was dealt the tough-luck loss as he gave up the two runs (none earned) on one hit while walking three and fanning four in 5.1 IP.
Gwinnett starter Ryan Weber (n/d) gave up one run on three hits to go along with three strikeouts in four innings of work.
RHP David Buchanan (2.2 IP, H, 3 K) had a scoreless outing in relief for the Pigs.
The IronPigs will return home to open a three-game set with the Durham Bulls on Friday night at Coca-Cola Park. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. as RHP Jake Thompson (4-5, 3.82) gets the ball for Lehigh Valley against Durham RHP Jaime Schultz (5-2, 2.57).
