Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
ABOUT LAST NIGHT: Gary Sanchez hammered a home run and starter Chad Green posted a long overdue win as the RailRiders snapped a three-game losing skid with a 5-2 defeat of the host Bisons on Tuesday night. The RailRiders shot back to .500 on the year while Buffalo dropped to 3-6 at home.
IT'S NOT EASY, BEIN' GREEN: Green entered the game 0-3 in five starts despite boasting the IL's fifth-best ERA. He was the only man among the circuit's top 21 in ERA that had yet to log a win. Green (1-3) got that victory with six innings of one-run ball. He gave up four hits, all singles including two on the infield, and faced two over the minimum while whiffing two and walking one. Three of his last four nods have been quality with only one total earned run in those quality starts. He has allowed one run or less in five of his six outings.
R&R: Rob Refsnyder started in right field for the first time since July 29, 2014. He made an impressive grab of a Jon Berti line drive for an out in the sixth and went 2-for-4, extending his hitting streak to eight games. His streak has lifted his average by 57 points (.190-.247). He entered this road trip in a 4-for-30 (.133) funk but has gone 9-for-22 (.409) on the journey. No RailRider has a hitting streak longer than eight thus far on the year. Refsnyder had the first one from April 8-17, then Aaron Judge posted his own from April 14-22.
NEPA'S OWN: Earlier today, the New York Yankees announced multiple roster moves for SWB. The highlight transaction has Mountain Top, Pa. native Matt Wotherspoon joining the team from Double-A Trenton. The former Pitt Panther was a 34th-round pick by the Yankees in 2014. He put up outstanding numbers against EL competition with the Thunder, going 1-0 with a save in six appearances. He allowed just three runs (two earned) on five hits and six walks over 17 IP for a 1.06 ERA, 0.65 WHIP and his 21 strikeouts made for an 11.1 K/9 IP rate. He is set to join Russ Canzler as the only NEPA natives to play for SWB. Canzler, a former big leaguer and IL MVP who saw time with SWB in 2014, recently took a from office job as the RailRiders' new business development executive.
DUAL THREAT: After going 2-for-5 with an RBI double and a two-run homer, catcher Gary Sanchez co-leads the IL in doubles and ranks second with 13 extra-base hits: nine doubles, one triple, three homers. A .175 bat after his first 10 games this year, he has gone 12-for-40 with seven extra-base hits, slashing .300/.349/.525/.874. When he has been behind the plate, opposing base stealers have been caught eight times in 15 attempts (.533), including two in three tries on Tuesday. He is one of three ranked IL catchers at 50% or better.
SECOND THOUGHTS: Pete Kozma filled in as the two-hole hitter as Judge got a night off. Kozma went 1-for-4 with a double, a walk and two runs scored. His RBI single in Friday's game one come-from-behind win at Rochester snapped an 0-for-25 slide. That started a run of hits in four of his last five games.
PARM CHARM: Former Red Wing Chris Parmelee (2012-14) started the year 2-for-26 (.077) with 10 strikeouts. He has since gone 13-for-38 (.342) with five extra-base hits and five RBIs over 11 games.
OFF THE RAILS: Since coming off the DL, Cesar Puello has gone 5-for-11...Over his last nine games, Donovan Solano has gone 14-for-35 (.400)...After Tuesday's game, Nick Swisher's reach of first in the eighth was changed from an Alexi Casilla error to a single...A day after he was activated off the DL, infielder Deibinson Romero played for the first time since April 8...He started at third base and went 0-for-3 with a walk and a strikeout...Before Tuesday's game, the New York Yankees announced that right-hander Vinnie Pestano was placed on SWB's DL retroactive to May 1...He last threw on April 30 at Rochester when he suffered his lone loss and allowed two runs on two hits, one walk and a hit batter over two innings...The other moves today had Dan Camarena return to Trenton while fellow reliever Mark Montgomery came up from Trenton...Montgomery had time with the RailRiders from 2013-15 and began this year in Double-A going 0-0 with a team-high five saves in six attempts and a 2.25 ERA.
