Lehigh Valley IronPigs News Release
The Lehigh Valley IronPigs (13-12) allowed five runs in the ninth in a 7-2 loss to the Pawtucket Red Sox (13-13) on Wednesday afternoon at Coca-Cola Park.
In the afore-mentioned top of the ninth, Sean Coyle drew a leadoff walk, advanced to second on a sac bunt, to third on a single and scored on a sac fly from Blake Swihart to give the Red Sox a 3-2 lead. Chris Marrero followed with a two-out grand slam off of LHP James Russell (0.1 IP, H, R, ER) to open up a 7-2 advantage for the visitors.
LHP Bobby LaFromboise (1.2 IP, 3 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 4 BB) was dealt the loss for the IronPigs and drops to 1-2 on the year.
RHP Roman Mendez (3.0 IP, 2 BB, K) earned the win for the PawSox to improve to 1-0 on the year.
The Pigs jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the first as three straight walks loaded the bases with nobody out before Tommy Joseph and Cam Perkins each knocked home runs via sac flies.
Red Sox starter Brian Johnson (n/d) gave up the two runs on no hits while walking three in one inning of work.
IronPigs starter Reinier Roibal (n/d) did not give up a hit while fanning one over three shutout innings.
Trailing 2-0, Pawtucket had runners at first and second with two outs in the seventh, but RHP Severino Gonzalez (4.0 IP, 5 H, BB) was able to get Deven Marrero to ground into a force and end the inning.
The PawSox would tie it at two apiece with a pair of runs in the eighth as Swihart drew a one-out walk, advanced to second on a single and scored on Chris Marrero's RBI single. An error by Perkins in center field allowed a second run to score on the play.
Perkins (0-4) saw his hitting streak come to an end at 15 games for the IronPigs.
The IronPigs will begin a two-game set with the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders on Thursday night at Coca-Cola Park. First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m. as RHP Mark Appel (3-0, 1.64) gets the ball for the Pigs against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre LHP Richard Bleier (0-0, 3.38).
