Hens Drop Extra Inning Battle with Braves
May 4, 2016 - International League (IL1)
Toledo Mud Hens News Release
The Hens dropped the series finale to the Braves in Gwinnett on Tuesday in extra innings by a score of 2-1. This loss snapped Toledo's three-game win streak, and the Hens fall to 11-13 on the year.
The majority of the game saw a pitchers duel between Hens SP Matt Boyd and Gwinnett righty Casey Kelly. Matt Boyd went eight strong innings for the visiting team, allowing no runs on five hits while striking out three.
The Braves threatened in the bottom half of the fourth inning with a leadoff double from 1B Tyler Moore. However, Boyd kept the remaining batters in check, retiring them with a groundout, strikeout, and a pop out. The remainder of the nine innings saw little offense from either team.
Bobby Parnell and Dustin Molleken tossed scoreless ninth and tenth innings for Toledo, only allowing one hit between the two.
The Hens notched the go-ahead run in the top of the eleventh inning when CF Tyler Collins recorded his fifth RBI of the season, singling home 2B Argeniz Diaz. Toledo took this 1-0 lead into the bottom of the eleventh, calling on Bruce Rondon to close the game. After Rondon allowed two singles, the Braves waved RF Emerson Landoni home. The throw from RF Steven Moya was on the money to C Miguel Gonzalez, however the ball was dropped and the run scored, tying the game.
Jeff Ferrell took the mound for Toledo in the twelfth, allowing a single to DH Sean Kazmar. Following a sacrifice bunt that moved Kazmar to second, a line drive base hit off the bat of SS Ozzie Albies scored Kazmar, ending the game. This was the first earned run against Ferrell this season.
Following a fifteen hit game, the Hens offense managed only six knocks on the day. Moya, one day after driving in five RBIs, was held without a hit.
The Mud Hens have an off day tomorrow and then return home to Fifth Third Field on Friday to begin their longest homestand of the season. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
