Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
BROOM CLEANING: The RailRiders completed a three-game sweep of the Toledo Mud Hens thanks to a 2-1 win on Sunday afternoon at PNC Field.
RAILRIDERS ROLLING: SWB has won five straight games for the first time since a season-best six-game winning streak from June 8-13.
THAT'S A START: Kyle Davies (7-6) became the first RailRider to reach seven wins since 2013 with a season-best eight innings. He allowed just one run on two hits including a Manny Pina home run. Davies retired the last 10 he faced in succession and 19 of the final 20. Chris Leroux and Jim Miller shared the team lead in 2014 with six wins apiece. Chris Bootcheck took mid-season IL All-Star honors with a team-high 10 wins in 2013.
FIRST TIME IN A LONG TIME: Davies had not fired eight or more innings since he lost a complete game as a Kansas City Royal at Detroit to the Mud Hens' parent club on Aug. 22, 2010. Max Scherzer was the opposing and victorious starter that day.
BOLTING IT DOWN: Caleb Cotham worked around a leadoff walk to secure his second career save and his first at Triple-A. He struck out Toledo's co-leaders in home runs, Mike Hessman and Steven Moya, to end the game. Both went down swinging. Entering 2015, Cotham had only relieved 30 times in his 85 games as a pro.
IMPACTFUL DEBUT: In his Triple-A debut, Cito Culver delivered the game-winning RBI with a single in the seventh that chased starter Thad Weber. A first-round pick in 2010 (32nd overall), he started at his natural shortstop position for the first time since July 18 and just the second time since July 9. He had seen more time at third base with some second base play during the end of his Double-A Trenton run.
SERIESOUS BUSINESS: SWB won the franchise's first set against the Mud Hens since claiming both series in 2012. It also made for the first sweep since a rain-shortened two-game series in Moosic from June 15-16, 2009. In the Yankees era (2007-present), SWB had never swept Toledo in a series of three or more games.
TRIPLE THREAT: Ben Gamel posted a triple for the third time in as many games, lifting his total to 12 which ties him for the most in all of MiLB. He has more triples than Norfolk (10) and Pawtucket (10). He finished the game 2-for-4 with a run scored. On the homestand he has hit .600 (6-for-12) with three triples, four RBIs and four runs scored.
YOU DOWN WITH OBP?: Rob Refsnyder went 1-for-4. He has hit safely in 18 of 21 at Triple-A going back to June 24. Over that stretch, he has slashed .361/.484/.514/.998 with the third-best OBP among full-season MiLB players. His average and OPS in that window each rank fourth the IL. His season-long .380 OBP ties him for second in the league.
PIRELA POP: Jose Pirela drove Gamel home after his third-inning triple. He has eight multi-hit showing over his last 12 SWB games played. He has snapped out of a 5-for-49 (.102) slide at Triple-A with hits in nine of those 12 affairs. During his string, he has gone 20-for-48 (.417) with five doubles, one homer, nine RBIs and 14 runs scored.
HE'S BAAAACK: In his first game action since July 17, Aaron Judge went 2-for-3 with a steal and a run scored. He has hit safely in six straight and nine of 10. After starting his Triple-A tenure 2-for-17 (.118), he has hit .333 (22-for-66).
OFF THE RAILS: The RailRiders lead the IL in batting average (.272) and OBP (.341)...SWB must win just two of its five remaining July games to post a winning month...Over the first eight seasons as a Yankees affiliate, SWB logged an above .500 July six times and the two exceptions both saw the squad finish a game under sea level...The RailRiders improved to 12-6 against the IL West.
