Bullpen Paces Hens as Toledo Wins Nail-Biter

July 27, 2015 - International League (IL1)
Toledo Mud Hens News Release

In their return to Fifth Third Field, the Mud Hens treated their faithful fans to a Monday night victory. The Rochester Red Wings made their first and only trip to Toledo to take on the Mud Hens in a three game series. With the recent roster moves in Detroit, the Hens were forced to use bullpen pitcher Josh Zeid as the starter. Behind Zeid and the rest of the bullpen, the Mud Hens were able to nail down a 2-1 victory.

The Mud Hens got on the board in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. Dixon Machado led off the game with a double driven deep to left-center field. Josh Wilson followed with a walk, and then both base runners were moved up thanks to a soft single from Tyler Collins. With the bases loaded, Mike Hessman grounded into a double play, but Machado was able to score to give Toledo a lead.

In the top of the second, Rochester's Reynaldo Rodriguez led off the inning with a solo home run off the brick foundation of the scoreboard in right field to tie the game at one. Despite that, Zeid made it through four innings with his only blemish being the home run. In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Hens reclaimed the lead courtesy of an RBI double from Dean Green.

After Zeid exited, Drew VerHagen came on to throw three scoreless innings, striking out three Red Wings. Guido Knudson came on in the eighth inning and pitched two scoreless innings to seal the Hens' victory and earn his seventh save of the season.

The Mud Hens take on the Red Wings on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. in game two of the three game series.
