Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
UNDERTOWED: A four-game winning streak for the RailRiders was washed away by the Norfolk Tides and Mother Nature in a 6-1 loss on Saturday night at PNC Field. Heavy, frequent showers forced the game to end with a run in and nobody out in the top of the seventh.
RUBBER, OR GLUE?: Today the RailRiders' play their fifth rubber match of the season. They have dropped three of the first four. After besting the IronPigs in a May 22 series-deciding contest at PNC Field, SWB has lost rubber matches versus Gwinnett on May 7, at Norfolk on May 13 and versus Charlotte on May 20.
SOUTHERN EXPOSURE: This afternoon's contest marks the final game against a Southern Division team this regular season for the RailRiders. They have gone 12-14 against their Southern brothers including a 2-3 mark against Norfolk. SWB went 7-6 at Southern Division ballparks, but entered today 4-8 against the South at PNC Field.
ROW TIDE: Last night's loss cemented another non-winning record for SWB against Norfolk. The franchise has not won more than it has lost against the Orioles' top farm club since a 5-3 performance in 2010: 2014 - 3-5; 2013 - 4-4; 2012 - 4-4, 2011 - 3-5.
INTERNATIONAL (LEAGUE) MAN OF MYSTERY: After an 0-for-3 effort at Norfolk dropped his average to .197 on May 11, Austin Romine has gone 17-for-39 (.347) with seven RBIs in 13 games played to lift his average to .256. The team's primary catcher has not owned an average that high since he was at .286 after his second game of the season made him 2-for-7 on the year.
MASON MASHER: Since he started his Triple-A tenure 1-for-10 at the plate, Mason Williams has hit safely in seven straight contests going 11-for-29 (.379) with five extra-base hits and three walks for a .438 OBP in that time.
R&R: Rob Refsnyder entered Wednesday in a 1-for-20 five-game funk. Out of the lineup that afternoon and off with the rest of the squad on Thursday, the second baseman has bounced back in a big way. He has reached base safely in all seven plate appearances this series (3-for-3, 4BB), shooting his batting average back up to .290, good for second on the squad. He has lifted his on-base percentage to .372.
TROUBLE AT HOME?: The RailRiders stand five games below .500 at PNC Field (12-17) and seven games over on the road (14-7). The team has hit .284 on the road compared to a .246 mark at home. On the road, SWB has scored 105 runs in 21 games (5.0/game). At home, the squad has plated 98 runs in 29 games (3.4/game). The pitching has performed better at home (3.38 ERA) than outside of Moosic (3.88). No IL team has a better road winning percentage than the RailRiders (.667) and no IL squad has more home losses than SWB (17).
TRANSACTION TRAIN: A flurry of roster moves were made yesterday. Among the moves, outfielder Ramon Flores was recalled to the big leagues and made his MLB debut last night as the starting left fielder. He went 0-for-4 in the Yankees' 5-3 win at Oakland. Flores left with a hot bat. After an 0-for-4 effort at Durham on May 16, he concluded his SWB time 15-for-44 (.341). Other roster moves saw Chris Martin join the team for MLB rehab. The 6'8" right-hander tossed a minimum-faced sixth. He was 0-1 with a save and a 3.55 ERA in 15 appearances with the big club to begin the season. Taylor Dugas rejoined the team from Double-A Trenton. The outfielder split last season between Trenton and SWB. He hit .225/.366/.281/.647 in 29 games with this year's Thunder, but ended hot. He was a .161 hitter after an 0-for-3 effort against Bowie on May 19. Over his last nine games played, he hit .333 (11-for-33) with five extra-base hits. Joel De La Cruz hit the SWB DL. In eight games/two starts with SWB, he is 4-0 with a 2.87 ERA.
