Charlotte Knights News Release
(UPTOWN CHARLOTTE, NC) - Scott Carroll tossed five scoreless innings, Matt Davidson recorded two hits, and the Charlotte Knights shut out the Lehigh Valley IronPigs on Sunday 2-0 in the finale of their three-game series from BB&T Ballpark in Uptown Charlotte. The win closed out the homestand for the first place Knights, who went 5-2 over the seven-game stretch.
Making his first start since being optioned down to the Knights from the Chicago White Sox on May 28, Carroll (2-1, 1.83) took a no-hitter into the fifth inning on Sunday and was effective over his first start since April 22. A one-out single to all-time Knights hits leader Jordan Danks broke up the no-no in the fifth inning. In all, Carroll allowed just the one hit on the day. He struck out three batters.
Charlotte's bullpen was solid - using three relievers to combine on four scoreless innings. Newcomer Miguel Chalas was the first Charlotte reliever called upon on Sunday and he was sharp over two scoreless innings. Maikel Cleto followed things up by striking out two batters over a scoreless eighth inning and Zach Phillips shut the door in the ninth inning to notch his first save of the season.
The Knights scored their first run of the game in the bottom of the third inning on a Jason Coats RBI single. That run came against Lehigh Valley starter Chris Leroux (0-1, 4.05), who was saddled with the loss. Leroux, a product of Winthrop University in nearby Rock Hill, SC, gave up one run on three hits over three innings of work.
Charlotte's second and final run of the day came on a Tyler Colvin RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Sunday's shutout was the second in as many days at BB&T Ballpark - the first back-to-back shutouts at the ballpark since April 13 and April 14 of the 2014 season. The Knights fell to Lehigh Valley on Saturday by a score of 1-0. Charlotte, however, won the three-game series two games to one.
BB&T Ballpark welcomed 9,309 fans through the gates on Sunday and currently leads all of Minor League Baseball in attendance with a total of 272,385 fans over 29 home games this season.
The Knights will have a scheduled off day on Monday before opening a three-game road trip in Durham, NC against the Durham Bulls on Tuesday. RHP Kyle Drabek gets the ball for the Knights in the opener against RHP Dylan Floro. Tuesday's game, which starts at 7:05 p.m., can be heard on ESPN 730 AM. The "Voice of the Charlotte Knights" Matt Swierad, who called his 2,500th career Knights game on Sunday, will have the call for all of the action starting at 6:50 p.m. from Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
